Stephanie Harzewski examines such best sellers as Bridget Jones's Diary The Devil Wears Prada, and Sex and the City as urban appropriations of and departures from the narrative traditions of the novel of manners, the popular romance, and the bildungsroman. Further, Harzewski uses chick lit as a lens through which to view gender relations in U.S. and British society in the 1990s. Chick Lit and Postfeminism is the first sustained historicization of this major pop-cultural phenomenon, and Harzewski successfully demonstrates how chick lit and the critical study of it yield social observations on upheavals in Anglo-American marriage and education patterns, heterosexual rituals, feminism, and postmodern values. 410 0$aCultural frames, framing culture. 606 $aAmerican fiction$xWomen authors$xHistory and criticism 606 $aEnglish fiction$xWomen authors$xHistory and criticism 606 $aChick lit$xHistory and criticism 606 $aWomen$xBooks and reading 606 $aSingle women in literature 606 $aConsumption (Economics) in literature 606 $aMan-woman relationships in literature 606 $aPopular culture in literature 606 $aSocial values in literature 606 $aFeminist theory 615 0$aAmerican fiction$xWomen authors$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aEnglish fiction$xWomen authors$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aChick lit$xHistory and criticism. 615 0$aWomen$xBooks and reading. 615 0$aSingle women in literature. 615 0$aConsumption (Economics) in literature. 615 0$aMan-woman relationships in literature. 615 0$aPopular culture in literature. 615 0$aSocial values in literature. 615 0$aFeminist theory. 676 $a813/.6099287 700 $aHarzewski$b Stephanie$f1974-$01862582 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910974499403321 996 $aChick lit and postfeminism$94468867 997 $aUNINA 999 $aThis Record contains information from the Harvard Library Bibliographic Dataset, which is provided by the Harvard Library under its Bibliographic Dataset Use Terms and includes data made available by, among others the Library of Congress
