He enjoyed a meteoric rise from Toulouse and Bordeaux to Paris and, despite his non-conformist tendencies, he escaped the guillotine. In fact, the revolutionaries acknowledged his position and during the Terror of 1794, they made him the director of the first school for the deaf. Later, he became a member of the first Ecole Normale, the National Institute, and the Académie Française. He is recognized today as having developed Enlightenment theories of pantomime, "signing,' and a form of "universal language" that later spread to Russia, Spain, and America. This is the first book-length biography of Sicard published in any language since 1873, despite Sicard's international renown. This thoughtful, engaging work explores French and American sign language and deaf studies set against the backdrop of the French Revolution and Napoleon. 606 $aHistorical linguistics 606 $aLanguage and languages$xStudy and teaching 606 $aFrance$xHistory 606 $aHistory, Modern 606 $aSemiotics 606 $aEurope$xHistory 606 $aHistorical Linguistics 606 $aLanguage Education 606 $aHistory of France 606 $aModern History 606 $aSemiotics 606 $aEuropean History 615 0$aHistorical linguistics. 615 0$aLanguage and languages$xStudy and teaching. 615 0$aFrance$xHistory. 615 0$aHistory, Modern. 615 0$aSemiotics. 615 0$aEurope$xHistory. 615 14$aHistorical Linguistics. 615 24$aLanguage Education. 615 24$aHistory of France. 615 24$aModern History. 615 24$aSemiotics. 615 24$aEuropean History. 676 $a371.91/2092 686 $aHIS013000$aHIS037060$aLAN017000$2bisacsh 700 $aKennedy$b Emmet$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut$0250494 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910973852403321 996 $aAbbé Sicard's Deaf Education$94330375 997 $aUNINA
