This project investigated the career ambitions of Ph.D.s in the physical and life sciences through focus groups and a national survey to determine the kinds of work conditions and compensation packages that would induce them to take positions teaching physics, chemistry, biology, and various electives in public high schools or positions developing secondary school science and mathematics curricula. The study conducted interviews with Ph.D.s who are already teaching in secondary schools to ascertain information from their experiences, with local school district administrators to assess what they are realistically willing to offer Ph.D. scientists to attract them, and with higher education administrators to explore programmatic changes they would need to institute to provide Ph.D.s with skills tailored to secondary school teaching. These investigations led to this report which describes the incentives local school districts could use in establishing pilot programs in this area. 410 0$aCompass series (Washington, D.C.) 606 $aScience teachers$xSupply and demand$zUnited States 606 $aMathematics teachers$xSupply and demand$zUnited States 606 $aHigh school teachers$xSupply and demand$zUnited States 606 $aDoctor of philosophy degree 615 0$aScience teachers$xSupply and demand 615 0$aMathematics teachers$xSupply and demand 615 0$aHigh school teachers$xSupply and demand 615 0$aDoctor of philosophy degree. 676 $a507/.1/273 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910973823803321 996 $aAttracting science and mathematics Ph.D.s to secondary school education$94359186 997 $aUNINA LEADER 03736nam 2200937Ia 450 001 9910963883103321 005 20251009142654.0 010 $a979-88-8183-023-6 010 $a979-82-16-23125-7 010 $a1-283-65847-X 010 $a1-4422-0324-2 024 7 $a10.5040/9798881830236 035 $a(CKB)2670000000277707 035 $a(EBL)1042719 035 $a(SSID)ssj0000757083 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)12297897 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000757083 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)10753902 035 $a(PQKB)11719016 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL1042719 035 $a(CaPaEBR)ebr10612147 035 $a(CaONFJC)MIL397097 035 $a(OCoLC)839670917 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL30667477 035 $a(OCoLC)1395181905 035 $a(Perlego)4176246 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL32269808 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC1042719 035 $a(OCoLC)1445176098 035 $a(UkLoBP)BP9798881830236BC 035 $a(EXLCZ)992670000000277707 071 42$aMWT16131883 100 $a20120523d2012 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur|n|---||||| 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 10$aTerrorist attacks on American soil $efrom the Civil War era to the present /$fJ.
