Robert Fogelin draws out the therapeutic aspects of Wittgenstein's later work by closely examining his account of rule-following and how he applies the idea in the philosophy of mathematics. The first of the book's two parts focuses on rule-following, Wittgenstein's "paradox of interpretation," and his naturalistic response to this paradox, all of which are persistent and crucial features of his later philosophy. Fogelin offers a corrective to the frequent misunderstanding that the paradox of interpretation is a paradox about meaning, and he emphasizes the importance of Wittgenstein's often undervalued appeals to natural responses. The second half of the book examines how Wittgenstein applies his reflections on rule-following to the status of mathematical propositions, proofs, and objects, leading to remarkable, demystifying results. Taking Wittgenstein at His Word shows that what Wittgenstein claims to be doing and what he actually does are much closer than is often recognized. In doing so, the book underscores fundamental--but frequently underappreciated--insights about Wittgenstein's later philosophy. 410 0$aPrinceton monographs in philosophy. 606 $aRules (Philosophy) 615 0$aRules (Philosophy) 676 $a192 700 $aFogelin$b Robert J$0547094 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910973491403321 996 $aTaking Wittgenstein at his word$94342233 997 $aUNINA LEADER 07065oam 22015254 450 001 9910957143803321 005 20250426110045.0 010 $a9781475522495 010 $a1475522495 010 $a9781475582390 010 $a1475582390 010 $a9781475516715 010 $a1475516711 035 $a(CKB)2670000000420233 035 $a(EBL)1587772 035 $a(SSID)ssj0001037045 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)11668217 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0001037045 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)11042732 035 $a(PQKB)10318612 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC1587772 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL1587772 035 $a(CaPaEBR)ebr10739469 035 $a(CaONFJC)MIL490365 035 $a(OCoLC)843336310 035 $a(IMF)GISIWEE 035 $a(IMF)GIAIWEA 035 $a(Perlego)1667394 035 $aGIAIWEA 035 $a(EXLCZ)992670000000420233 100 $a20020129d2013 uf 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur|n|---||||| 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 10$aGermany In An Interconnected World Economy /$fAshoka Mody 205 $a1st ed. 210 1$aWashington, D.C. :$cInternational Monetary Fund,$d2013. 215 $a1 online resource (282 p.) 300 $aDescription based upon print version of record. 311 08$a9781616354244 311 08$a1616354240 320 $aIncludes bibliographical references and index. 327 $aCover; Contents; Foreword; Preface; 1 Tests of German Resilience; The Postwar Catch-Up; The Slowdown; Reemergence; The Great Recession; References; 2 The Crisis's Impact on Potential Growth in Germany: The Nature of the Shock Matters; Introduction; Background: Concepts and Related Literature; Methodology and Results; Germany's Growth Sources through a Growth Accounting Lens; Conclusion; References; Appendix; 3 German Productivity Growth: An Industry Perspective; Introduction; German and United States Productivity: Stylized Facts; An Industry Perspective; Conclusion; References; Appendix 327 $a4 What Does the Crisis Tell Us about the German Labor Market?Introduction; Background; Recent Developments; Understanding German Labor Market Dynamics; Conclusion; References; Appendix; 5 Growth Spillover Dynamics: From Crisis to Recovery; Introduction; Growth Linkages and Spillovers: Related Literature; Empirical Approach; Results; Channels of Growth Spillover Transmission; Conclusion; References; Appendix; 6 Do Fiscal Spillovers Matter?; Introduction; Literature; Framework; Simulation Results; Conclusion; References; Appendix 327 $a7 Current Account Imbalances: Can Structural Policies Make a Difference?Introduction; Literature Review; Baseline Model; Structural Policies and the Current Account; Long-Standing Structural Differences and the Current Account; Interaction of Structural Factors and Fundamentals; Implications for Germany; Conclusion; References; Appendix; 8 Discussion; Comment on Chapters 2 and 3; Comment on Chapter 4; Comment on Chapter 5; Comment on Chapter 7; References; About the Contributors; Index; A; B; C; D; E; F; G; H; I; J; K; L; M; N; O; P; R; S; T; U; V; W 330 3 $aGermany has been a central player in discussions on the future architecture of Europe, and has been called on to play a larger role in supporting global and, especially, European recovery from the financial crisis that triggered the Great Recession. This book focuses on the possible economic role of Germany and shows that the quantitative effects of a German fiscal stimulus would be small on the heavily indebted euro area periphery countries that most need the boost. The book finds that Germany itself faces a growth challenge and that efforts to raise its own growth potential are important for Germany, and that more rapid growth of domestic demand will more powerfully stimulate European economic growth through its expanded demand for imports. 410 0$aBooks 606 $aEconomic development$zGermany 606 $aAggregate Human Capital$2imf 606 $aAggregate Labor Productivity$2imf 606 $aBalance of payments$2imf 606 $aCurrency$2imf 606 $aCurrent Account Adjustment$2imf 606 $aCurrent account$2imf 606 $aDemand and Supply of Labor: General$2imf 606 $aEconomic theory$2imf 606 $aEmployment$2imf 606 $aExports and Imports$2imf 606 $aExternalities$2imf 606 $aFinancial sector policy and analysis$2imf 606 $aForeign exchange$2imf 606 $aIncome economics$2imf 606 $aIndustrial productivity$2imf 606 $aIntergenerational Income Distribution$2imf 606 $aInternational economics$2imf 606 $aInternational finance$2imf 606 $aLabor market$2imf 606 $aLabor markets$2imf 606 $aLabor$2imf 606 $aLabour$2imf 606 $aMacroeconomics$2imf 606 $aMacroeconomics: Production$2imf 606 $aProduction and Operations Management$2imf 606 $aProduction$2imf 606 $aProductivity$2imf 606 $aPublic finance & taxation$2imf 606 $aPublic Finance$2imf 606 $aShort-term Capital Movements$2imf 606 $aSpillovers$2imf 606 $aTotal factor productivity$2imf 606 $aUnemployment$2imf 606 $aUnemployment: Models, Duration, Incidence, and Job Search$2imf 606 $aWages$2imf 607 $aGermany$xEconomic conditions 607 $aGermany$2imf 615 0$aEconomic development 615 7$aAggregate Human Capital 615 7$aAggregate Labor Productivity 615 7$aBalance of payments 615 7$aCurrency 615 7$aCurrent Account Adjustment 615 7$aCurrent account 615 7$aDemand and Supply of Labor: General 615 7$aEconomic theory 615 7$aEmployment 615 7$aExports and Imports 615 7$aExternalities 615 7$aFinancial sector policy and analysis 615 7$aForeign exchange 615 7$aIncome economics 615 7$aIndustrial productivity 615 7$aIntergenerational Income Distribution 615 7$aInternational economics 615 7$aInternational finance 615 7$aLabor market 615 7$aLabor markets 615 7$aLabor 615 7$aLabour 615 7$aMacroeconomics 615 7$aMacroeconomics: Production 615 7$aProduction and Operations Management 615 7$aProduction 615 7$aProductivity 615 7$aPublic finance & taxation 615 7$aPublic Finance 615 7$aShort-term Capital Movements 615 7$aSpillovers 615 7$aTotal factor productivity 615 7$aUnemployment 615 7$aUnemployment: Models, Duration, Incidence, and Job Search 615 7$aWages 676 $a332.152 700 $aMody$b Ashoka$0888386 801 0$bDcWaIMF 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910957143803321 996 $aGermany In An Interconnected World Economy$94352509 997 $aUNINA
