On the one hand, it seems to be decaying under the leadership of political elites who make decisions behind closed doors. On the other hand, citizens are taking to the streets to firmly assert their political participation across the globe. Drawing on a range of theoretical and empirical perspectives, this collection examines the multiple transformations which both the practice and the idea of democracy are undergoing today. It starts by questioning whether there is a crisis of democracy, or if part of this crisis lies in the inadequacy of social and political theory 606 $aSocial movements$vCase studies 606 $aProtest movements$vCase studies 606 $aCivil disobedience$vCase studies 606 $aDemocracy$vCase studies 606 $aMouvements sociaux$3(CaQQLa)201-0044819$vEtudes de cas$3(CaQQLa)201-0376950 606 $aContestation$3(CaQQLa)201-0201503$vEtudes de cas$3(CaQQLa)201-0376950 606 $aDesobeissance civile$3(CaQQLa)201-0204700$vEtudes de cas$3(CaQQLa)201-0376950 606 $aSOCIAL SCIENCE$xGeneral$2bisacsh 606 $aCivil disobedience$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst00862481 606 $aDemocracy$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst00890077 606 $aProtest movements$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst01079826 606 $aSocial movements$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst01122657 608 $aCase studies.$2fast 615 0$aSocial movements 615 0$aProtest movements 615 0$aCivil disobedience 615 0$aDemocracy 615 6$aMouvements sociaux 615 6$aContestation 615 6$aDesobeissance civile 615 7$aSOCIAL SCIENCE$xGeneral. 615 7$aCivil disobedience. 615 7$aDemocracy. 615 7$aProtest movements. 615 7$aSocial movements. 676 $a303.48/4 701 $aCelikates$b Robin$f1977-$0799704 701 $aKreide$b Regina$01818043 701 $aWesche$b Tilo$f1968-$01212390 712 02$aBloomsbury (Firm), 801 0$bDLC 801 1$bDLC 801 2$bN$T 801 2$bIDEBK 801 2$bYDXCP 801 2$bE7B 801 2$bEBLCP 801 2$bOCLCF 801 2$bAGLDB 801 2$bICA 801 2$bDEBSZ 801 2$bJBG 801 2$bXFH 801 2$bU3W 801 2$bD6H 801 2$bVNS 801 2$bVTS 801 2$bNLE 801 2$bAU@ 801 2$bUKMGB 801 2$bUKAHL 801 2$bNLW 801 2$bOCLCO 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bOCLCO 801 2$bOCLCL 801 2$bCLOUD 801 2$bOCLCO 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bOCLCO 801 2$bUtOrBLW 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910973152903321 996 $aTransformations of Democracy$94376977 997 $aUNINA LEADER 03330nam 22004573a 450 001 9910976051103321 005 20250204001015.0 010 $a9780776606514 010 $a0776606514 010 $a9780776615516 010 $a0776615513 010 $a9780776627151 010 $a0776627155 024 8 $a10.26530/OAPEN_578784 035 $a(CKB)37387659000041 035 $a(VaAlCD)20.500.12592/qvzn29 035 $a(schport)gibson_crkn/2009-12-01/4/408188 035 $a(ScCtBLL)195dd628-e8c6-42d7-b208-58f342630b63 035 $a(OCoLC)817088033 035 $a(EXLCZ)9937387659000041 100 $a20250204i20072020 uu 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur||||||||||| 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 00$aBorderlands$fEmmanuel Brunet-Jailly 210 1$a[s.l.] :$cUniversity of Ottawa Press / Les Presses de l'Université d'Ottawa,$d2007. 215 $a1 online resource (1 p.) 330 $aBorder security has been high on public-policy agendas in Europe and North America since the September 11, 2001 attacks on the World Trade Centre in New York City and on the headquarters of the American military in Washington DC. Governments are now confronted with managing secure borders, a policy objective that in this era of increased free trade and globalization must compete with intense cross-border flows of people and goods. Border-security policies must enable security personnel to identify, or filter out, dangerous individuals and substances from among the millions of travelers and tons of goods that cross borders daily, particularly in large cross-border urban regions. This book addresses this gap between security needs and an understanding of borders and borderlands. Specifically, the chapters in this volume ask policy-makers to recognize that two fundamental elements define borders and borderlands: first, human activities (the agency and agent power of individual ties and forces spanning a border), and second, the broader social processes that frame individual action, such as market forces, government activities (law, regulations, and policies), and the regional culture and politics of a borderland.Borders emerge as the historically and geographically variable expression of human ties exercised within social structures of varying force and influence, and it is the interplay and interdependence between people's incentives to act and the surrounding structures (i.e. constructed social processes that contain and constrain individual action) that determine the effectiveness of border security policies. This book argues that the nature of borders is to be porous, which is a problem for security policy makers. It shows that when for economic, cultural, or political reasons human activities increase across a border and borderland, governments need to increase cooperation and collaboration with regard to security policies, if only to avoid implementing mismatched security policies. 606 $aPolitical Science$2bisacsh 606 $aPolitical science 615 7$aPolitical Science 615 0$aPolitical science. 700 $aBrunet-Jailly$b Emmanuel$01190662 801 0$bScCtBLL 801 1$bScCtBLL 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910976051103321 996 $aBorderlands$93088037 997 $aUNINA
