CONCLUSION""; ""REFERENCES"" 330 3 $aThis paper uses Engel curves to estimate real income growth in Brazil. The estimated per capita household real income growth in metropolitan areas during 1987-2002 is about 4½ percent per year, well above the "headline" growth of 1½ percent obtained by deflating nominal incomes by the CPI. This suggests a substantial CPI bias during that period, likely owing to one-off effects of trade liberalization and inflation stabilization. The estimated unmeasured gains are higher for poorer households, implying a marked reduction in "real" inequality. This finding challenges the conventional wisdom that post-reform real income growth in Brazil was low. 410 0$aIMF Working Papers; Working Paper ;$vNo. 2006/275 606 $aInflation (Finance)$zBrazil 606 $aStructural adjustment (Economic policy)$zBrazil 606 $aConsumer Economics: Empirical Analysis$2imf 606 $aConsumer price indexes$2imf 606 $aConsumption$2imf 606 $aDeflation$2imf 606 $aEconomic Development: General$2imf 606 $aEconomic Integration$2imf 606 $aEconomics$2imf 606 $aEnvironmental Accounts$2imf 606 $aExpenditure$2imf 606 $aExpenditures, Public$2imf 606 $aHousehold consumption$2imf 606 $aIncome$2imf 606 $aInflation$2imf 606 $aMacroeconomics$2imf 606 $aMeasurement and Analysis of Poverty$2imf 606 $aMeasurement and Data on National Income and Product Accounts and Wealth$2imf 606 $aNational accounts$2imf 606 $aNational Government Expenditures and Related Policies: General$2imf 606 $aPersonal income$2imf 606 $aPersonal Income, Wealth, and Their Distributions$2imf 606 $aPrice indexes$2imf 606 $aPrice Level$2imf 606 $aPrices$2imf 606 $aPublic finance & taxation$2imf 606 $aPublic Finance$2imf 606 $aTotal expenditures$2imf 606 $aUrban, Rural, and Regional Economics: Household Analysis: General$2imf 607 $aBrazil$2imf 615 0$aInflation (Finance) 615 0$aStructural adjustment (Economic policy) 615 7$aConsumer Economics: Empirical Analysis 615 7$aConsumer price indexes 615 7$aConsumption 615 7$aDeflation 615 7$aEconomic Development: General 615 7$aEconomic Integration 615 7$aEconomics 615 7$aEnvironmental Accounts 615 7$aExpenditure 615 7$aExpenditures, Public 615 7$aHousehold consumption 615 7$aIncome 615 7$aInflation 615 7$aMacroeconomics 615 7$aMeasurement and Analysis of Poverty 615 7$aMeasurement and Data on National Income and Product Accounts and Wealth 615 7$aNational accounts 615 7$aNational Government Expenditures and Related Policies: General 615 7$aPersonal income 615 7$aPersonal Income, Wealth, and Their Distributions 615 7$aPrice indexes 615 7$aPrice Level 615 7$aPrices 615 7$aPublic finance & taxation 615 7$aPublic Finance 615 7$aTotal expenditures 615 7$aUrban, Rural, and Regional Economics: Household Analysis: General 700 $ade Carvalho Filho$b Irineu$01815919 701 $aChamon$b Marcos$01090692 801 0$bDcWaIMF 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910972476103321 996 $aThe Myth of Post-Reform Income Stagnation in Brazil$94372376 997 $aUNINA
