It provides sufficient content for a two course sequence in Fourier Analysis or Harmonic Analysis at the graduate level. In true pedagogical spirit, each chapter presents a valuable selection of exercises with targeted hints that will assist the reader in the development of research skills. Proofs are presented with care and attention to detail. Examples are provided to enrich understanding and improve overall comprehension of the material. Carefully drawn illustrations build intuition in the proofs. Appendices contain background material for those that need to review key concepts. Compared with the author?s other GTM volumes (Classical Fourier Analysis and Modern Fourier Analysis), this text offers a more classroom-friendly approach as it contains shorter sections, more refined proofs, and a wider range of exercises. Topics include the Fourier Transform, Multipliers, Singular Integrals, Littlewood?Paley Theory, BMO, Hardy Spaces, and Weighted Estimates, and can be easily covered within two semesters. 410 0$aGraduate Texts in Mathematics,$x2197-5612 ;$v302 606 $aFourier analysis 606 $aHarmonic analysis 606 $aFourier Analysis 606 $aAbstract Harmonic Analysis 615 0$aFourier analysis. 615 0$aHarmonic analysis. 615 14$aFourier Analysis. 615 24$aAbstract Harmonic Analysis. 676 $a515.2433 700 $aGrafakos$b Loukas$0298204 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 912 $a9910874664503321 996 $aFundamentals of Fourier Analysis$94183629 997 $aUNINA LEADER 04537nam 22007574a 450 001 9910971552403321 005 20200520144314.0 010 $a9780674267077 010 $a0674267079 010 $a9780674043244 010 $a0674043243 024 7 $a10.4159/9780674043244 035 $a(CKB)1000000000786883 035 $a(StDuBDS)AH23050878 035 $a(SSID)ssj0000228651 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)12094651 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000228651 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)10154984 035 $a(PQKB)11567763 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL3300474 035 $a(CaPaEBR)ebr10318467 035 $a(OCoLC)923111889 035 $a(DE-B1597)574542 035 $a(DE-B1597)9780674043244 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC3300474 035 $a(OCoLC)1294424403 035 $a(Perlego)1148491 035 $a(EXLCZ)991000000000786883 100 $a20030318d2003 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur||||||||||| 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 10$aProfiles, probabilities, and stereotypes /$fFrederick Schauer 205 $a1st ed. 210 $aCambridge, Mass. $cBelknap Press of Harvard University Press$d2003 215 $a1 online resource (384 p.) 300 $aOriginally published: 2003. 311 08$a9780674011861 311 08$a0674011864 311 08$a9780674021181 311 08$a0674021185 320 $aIncludes bibliographical references (p. 301-353) and index. 327 $aPreface Introduction: Painting with a Broad Brush 1. Schauer argues that there is good profiling and bad profiling. If we can effectively determine which is which, we stand to gain, not lose, a measure of justice. 330 $bThis book employs a careful, rigorous, yet lively approach to the timely question of whether we can justly generalize about members of a group on the basis of statistical tendencies of that group. For instance, should a military academy exclude women because, on average, women are more sensitive to hazing than men? Should airlines force all pilots to retire at age sixty, even though most pilots at that age have excellent vision? Can all pit bulls be banned because of the aggressive characteristics of the breed? And, most controversially, should government and law enforcement use racial and ethnic profiling as a tool to fight crime and terrorism? Frederick Schauer strives to analyze and resolve these prickly questions. When the law "thinks like an actuary"--makes decisions about groups based on averages--the public benefit can be enormous. On the other hand, profiling and stereotyping may lead to injustice. And many stereotypes are self-fulfilling, while others are simply spurious. How, then, can we decide which stereotypes are accurate, which are distortions, which can be applied fairly, and which will result in unfair stigmatization? These decisions must rely not only on statistical and empirical accuracy, but also on morality. Even statistically sound generalizations may sometimes have to yield to the demands of justice. But broad judgments are not always or even usually immoral, and we should not always dismiss them because of an instinctive aversion to stereotypes. As Schauer argues, there is good profiling and bad profiling. If we can effectively determine which is which, we stand to gain, not lose, a measure of justice. 606 $aStereotypes (Social psychology) 606 $aDecision making 606 $aJudgment 606 $aForecasting 606 $aJustice 615 0$aStereotypes (Social psychology) 615 0$aDecision making. 615 0$aJudgment. 615 0$aForecasting. 615 0$aJustice. 676 $a303.3/85 700 $aSchauer$b Frederick F$0263007 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910971552403321 996 $aProfiles, probabilities and stereotypes$943537 997 $aUNINA LEADER 01783nam0 22004573i 450 001 VAN00291267 005 20250625122245.497 017 70$2N$a9781475722444 100 $a20250410d1993 |0itac50 ba 101 $aeng 102 $aUS 105 $a|||| ||||| 181 $ai$b e 182 $ab 183 $acr 200 1 $aBox Splines$fCarl de Boor, Klaus Hllig, Sherman Riemenschneider 210 $aNew York$cSpringer$d1993 215 $axvii, 200 p.$cill.$d24 cm 410 1$1001VAN00023717$12001 $aApplied mathematical sciences$1210 $aBerlin [etc]$cSpringer$d1971-$v98 606 $a41A15$xSpline approximation [MSC 2020]$3VANC022985$2MF 610 $aAlgebra$9KW:K 610 $aAlgorithms$9KW:K 610 $aDivision$9KW:K 610 $aEquations$9KW:K 610 $aNumerical Analysis$9KW:K 610 $aProofs$9KW:K 620 $aUS$dNew York$3VANL000011 700 1$aDe Boor$bCarl$3VANV030329$013943 701 1$aHollig$bKlaus$3VANV053274$0350702 701 1$aRiemenschneider$bSherman D.$3VANV042985$060470 712 $aSpringer $3VANV108073$4650 790 1$aBoor, Carl de$zDe Boor, Carl$3VANV030330 790 1$aRiemenschneider, S.
