This policy brief is based on recent research that found a general negative and sensationalised attitude towards disfigurement in the media.Dsfigurement is a condition that can affect anyone at any time in life regardless their social or demographic background due to accidents or health conditions or be congenital. In the UK, one in 111 people have facial disfigurements. In order to improve the ways in which media portray disfigurement, this policy brief argues that media should move away from sensationalised coverage on disfigurement and focus instead on the lived experiences of individuals with this condition. It recommends strengthening diversity-oriented editorial practices and training as well as media literacy education. In addition, it addresses the lack of guidelines on the portrayal of disfigurement and urges regulatory bodies to be more efficient in handling complaints." 410 0$aCAMRI policy briefs ;$vVolume 3. 606 $aFace$xAbnormalities$xSocial aspects 606 $aDisfigured persons$xSocial aspects 606 $aMass media$xLaw and legislation$zGreat Britain 615 0$aFace$xAbnormalities$xSocial aspects. 615 0$aDisfigured persons$xSocial aspects. 615 0$aMass media$xLaw and legislation 676 $a343.41099 700 $aGarrisi$b Diana$0863669 702 $aJanciute$b Laima 702 $aJohanssen$b Jacob 801 0$bWaSeSS 801 1$bWaSeSS 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910282225803321 996 $aAppearance, discrimination and the media$91927731 997 $aUNINA LEADER 03507nam 2200757Ia 450 001 9910969757703321 005 20200520144314.0 010 $a9786613005175 010 $a9781283005173 010 $a1283005174 010 $a9789988647599 010 $a998864759X 010 $a9789988647476 010 $a9988647476 010 $a9789988647230 010 $a9988647239 035 $a(CKB)2670000000079558 035 $a(EBL)1134953 035 $a(SSID)ssj0000486631 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)11318106 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000486631 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)10430614 035 $a(PQKB)11263949 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC1134953 035 $a(OCoLC)778073657 035 $a(MdBmJHUP)muse21975 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL1134953 035 $a(CaPaEBR)ebr10448522 035 $a(OCoLC)845251423 035 $a(Perlego)2102065 035 $a(EXLCZ)992670000000079558 100 $a20080131d2007 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur|n|---||||| 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 00$aPopulation, health and development in Ghana $eattaining the millenium [sic] development goals /$fedited by Chuks J. In this volume scholars and policymakers in the fields of population and health reflect on the attainments of some of these goals, on the basis of empirical evidence in the Ghanaian context.
