Unlike any other noun class, the n -stems have roots that are characterized by systematic consonant and vowel alternations across the different Germanic dialects. This monograph represents a diachronic investigation of this root variation. It traces back the Germanic n -stems to their Indo-European origin, and clarifies their formal characteristics by an interaction of sound law and analogy. This book therefore is not just an attempt to account for the typology of the Germanic n -stems, but also a case study of the impact that sound change may have on the evolution of morphology and derivation. 410 0$aLeiden Studies in Indo-European$v18. 606 $aGermanic languages$xPhonology 606 $aProto-Germanic language$xPhonology 615 0$aGermanic languages$xPhonology. 615 0$aProto-Germanic language$xPhonology. 676 $a430/.041/5 700 $aKroonen$b Guus$f1979-$01787929 801 0$bNL-LeKB 801 1$bNL-LeKB 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910969639103321 996 $aThe proto-germanic n-stems$94322009 997 $aUNINA
