It recovers the lost story of 140,000 Chinese workers, men mostly from the Northern Chinese province of Shandong, who were recruited by the British and French governments to support their fight against the Germans during WWI. These workers later were also ?imported? to the US and Canada as those countries joined the war and felt the need for additional labor. The work is based on a decade of archival research in China, Taiwan, France, Germany, the US, Canada, and Britain. It sheds light on these long-forgotten workers, who were instrumental in the Allied efforts that resulted in a defeat of Germany. Yet the persistent racism they encountered in the West, and ultimately the erasure of their contribution both by the countries they served and the Chinese elites who recruited them for the purpose, raises the question of how power determines who is included and excluded from the historical record. 606 $aWorld War, 1914-1918$xConscript labor$zEurope 606 $aWorld War, 1914-1918$xParticipation, Chinese 606 $aWorld War, 1914-1918$zGreat Britain 606 $aWorld War, 1914-1918$zFrance 606 $aForeign workers, Chinese$zEurope$xHistory$y20th century 606 $aWorking class$zChina$xHistory$y20th century 607 $aChina$xRelations$zGreat Britain 607 $aChina$xRelations$zFrance 607 $aGreat Britain$xRelations$zChina 607 $aFrance$xRelations$zChina 615 0$aWorld War, 1914-1918$xConscript labor 615 0$aWorld War, 1914-1918$xParticipation, Chinese. 615 0$aWorld War, 1914-1918 615 0$aWorld War, 1914-1918 615 0$aForeign workers, Chinese$xHistory 615 0$aWorking class$xHistory 676 $a940.3089/951044 700 $aXu$b Guoqi$0786033 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910956445303321 996 $aStrangers on the Western Front$94352272 997 $aUNINA LEADER 02876nam 2200805Ia 450 001 9910969628803321 005 20241218115110.0 010 $a9786610405909 010 $a9781040214602 010 $a1040214606 010 $a9780429177323 010 $a0429177321 010 $a9781482267884 010 $a1482267888 010 $a9781280405907 010 $a1280405902 010 $a9780203484388 010 $a020348438X 024 7 $a10.1201/9781482267884 035 $a(CKB)111056486520548 035 $a(EBL)170308 035 $a(OCoLC)277556388 035 $a(SSID)ssj0000178771 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)11156070 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000178771 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)10229874 035 $a(PQKB)10698545 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL170308 035 $a(CaPaEBR)ebr10056102 035 $a(CaONFJC)MIL40590 035 $a(OCoLC)52295083 035 $a(OCoLC)1000437350 035 $a(DcWaBHL)29925 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL31902985 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC170308 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC31902985 035 $a(OCoLC)1499720936 035 $a(EXLCZ)99111056486520548 100 $a19981102d1999 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur|n|---||||| 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 10$aInfection and immunity 205 $a1st ed. 210 $aLondon $cTaylor & Francis$dc1999 215 $a1 online resource (250 p.) 215 $a1 online resource 225 1 $aModules in life sciences 300 $aDescription based upon print version of record. 311 08$a9780748407880 311 08$a074840788X 320 $aIncludes bibliographical references and index. 327 $aBook Cover; Title; Contents; General preface to the series; Preface; The Immune System; Bacteria; Viruses; Parasitic Infections; Fungi; Vaccines; Index 330 $aThis concise text explores the interactions between pathogens and the immune system. Taking a disease-based approach, it explains how micro-organisms adapted to growth in human hosts can evade the immune system and cause disease.The opening chapter overviews the innate and adaptive immune responses to microbes. Subsequent chapters are specific to particular pathogens, beginning with their biology and leading on to illustrate mechanisms of adaptation and ensuing consequences. Each of these chapters ends with a summary, review questions and further reading lists.Summaries, review questio 410 0$aModules in life sciences. 606 $aImmunology 606 $aInfection 615 0$aImmunology. 615 0$aInfection. 676 $a616.079 701 $aDavies$b Huw$f1959-$0846102 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910969628803321 996 $aInfection and immunity$94323745 997 $aUNINA
