Alutiiq artists carved the masks from wood or bark into images of ancestors, animal spirits, and other mythological forces; these extraordinary creations have been an essential tool for communicating with the spirit world and have played an important role in dances and hunting festivities for centuries. Giinaquq: Like a Face presents thirty-three full-color images of these fantastic and eye-catching masks, which have been preserved for more than a century as part of the Pinart Collection in a small French museum. These masks, collected in 1871 by a young French scholar of indigenous cultures, are presented for the first time in their complete cultural context, celebrating the rich history of the Alutiiq people and their artistic traditions. 517 3 $aGiinaquq :$ecomme un visage : les masques sugpiat de l'archipel de Kodiak 606 $aPacific Gulf Yupik Eskimos$xMaterial culture$zAlaska$zKodiak Island$vExhibitions 606 $aEskimo masks$zAlaska$zKodiak Island$vExhibitions 607 $aKodiak Island (Alaska)$xSocial life and customs$vExhibitions 615 0$aPacific Gulf Yupik Eskimos$xMaterial culture 615 0$aEskimo masks 676 $a979.8/40899714 701 $aHaakanson$b Sven D$0981248 701 $aSteffian$b Amy F$0981249 712 02$aAlutiiq Museum & Archaeological Repository. 712 02$aChateau-Musee de Boulogne-sur-Mer. 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910969530803321 996 $aGiinaquq$94419059 997 $aUNINA
