The occasion was the mission of Lord Macartney, sent by the British crown and sponsored by the East India Company, to the court of the Qianlong emperor. Cherishing Men from Afar looks at the initial confrontation between these two empires from a historical perspective informed by the insights of contemporary postcolonial criticism and cultural studies. The history of this encounter, like that of most colonial and imperial encounters, has traditionally been told from the Europeans? point of view. In this book, James L. Hevia consults Chinese sources?many previously untranslated?for a broader sense of what Qing court officials understood; and considers these documents in light of a sophisticated anthropological understanding of Qing ritual processes and expectations. He also reexamines the more familiar British accounts in the context of recent critiques of orientalism and work on the development of the bourgeois subject. Hevia?s reading of these sources reveals the logics of two discrete imperial formations, not so much impaired by the cultural misunderstandings that have historically been attributed to their meeting, but animated by differing ideas about constructing relations of sovereignty and power. His examination of Chinese and English-language scholarly treatments of this event, both historical and contemporary, sheds new light on the place of the Macartney mission in the dynamics of colonial and imperial encounters. 606 $aDiplomatic etiquette$zChina 607 $aChina$xForeign relations$zGreat Britain 607 $aGreat Britain$xForeign relations$zChina 607 $aChina$xForeign relations$y1644-1912 615 0$aDiplomatic etiquette 676 $a327.51041/09/033 700 $aHevia$b James Louis$f1947-$01004678 801 0$bNDD 801 1$bNDD 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910972792303321 996 $aCherishing men from afar$92308192 997 $aUNINA LEADER 03264nam 2200841Ia 450 001 9910969059803321 005 20200520144314.0 010 $a9786612867019 010 $a9780773581210 010 $a0773581219 010 $a9781282867017 010 $a1282867016 010 $a9780773576575 010 $a0773576576 024 7 $a10.1515/9780773576575 035 $a(CKB)2670000000079235 035 $a(EBL)4503025 035 $a(SSID)ssj0000478594 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)11320440 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000478594 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)10434817 035 $a(PQKB)10845195 035 $a(CEL)432944 035 $a(CaBNvSL)slc00225536 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC3271187 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC3332031 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL3332031 035 $a(CaPaEBR)ebr10558980 035 $a(CaONFJC)MIL286701 035 $a(OCoLC)923233802 035 $a(DE-B1597)656140 035 $a(DE-B1597)9780773576575 035 $a(Perlego)3551134 035 $a(EXLCZ)992670000000079235 100 $a20070927d2007 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur|n|---||||| 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 10$aMoving cultures $emobile communication in everyday life /$fAndre H.
