Die immense Bedeutung der Versklavung von Menschen für das frühneuzeitliche Europa wird heutzutage selten in Zweifel gezogen. Gerade in den iberischen Städten des 16. Jahrhunderts gehörten Sklavenmärkte zur Alltäglichkeit. Insbesondere Theologen beschäftigten sich intensiv mit der Frage, ob die Versklavung nicht-christlicher Gefangener erlaubt sei. Die Sklaverei war aber nicht nur ein Thema der Studierzimmer oder ein Phänomen des städtischen Lebens. Sie hatte auch eine zutiefst politische Komponente. Entsprechend widmet sich der Band der Sklavereipolitik der kastilischen Krone im 16. Jahrhundert. Sklaverei wird hier als mehrdimensionaler Komplex zwischen herrschaftspolitischen, ökonomischen, militärischen und theologischen Interessen verortet.
