Die Konturen dieser "mittelalterlichen Linguistik" werden deutlich in einer komparatistischen Gegenüberstellung mit zwei weiteren, ganz unterschiedlichen sprachtheoretischen Ansätzen: (1) vier Traktaten mittelalterlicher isländischer Grammatiker, in denen sich ein Sonderweg mittelalterlicher Sprachbeschreibung beobachten lässt, und (2) Saussures "Cours de linguistique générale" als einem Grundlagenwerk der modernen Linguistik.
