The Kowoj: Identity, Migration, and Geopolitics in Late Postclassic Pete?n, Guatemala summarizes the results of recent research into this ethno-political group conducted by Prudence Rice, Don Rice, and their colleagues. Chapters in The Kowoj address the question "Who are the Kowoj?" from varied viewpoints: archaeological, archival, linguistic, ethnographic, and bioarchaeological. Using data drawn primarily from the peninsular site of Zacpete?n, the authors illuminate Kowoj history, ritual components of their self-expressed identity, and their archaeological identification. These data support the Kowoj claim of migration from Mayapa?n in Yucata?n, where they were probably affiliated with the Xiw, in opposition to the Itza. These enmities extended into Pete?n, culminating in civil warfare by the time of final Spanish conquest in 1697. The first volume to consider Postclassic Pete?n from broadly integrative anthropological, archaeological, and historical perspectives, The Kowoj is an important addition to the literature on late Maya culture and history in the southern lowlands. It will be of particular interest to archaeologists, historians, ethnohistorians, art historians, and epigraphers. 410 0$aMesoamerican worlds. 517 3 $aIdentity, migration, and geopolitics in late postclassic Peten, Guatemala 606 $aKowoj Indians$zGuatemala$zPeten (Dept.)$xHistory 606 $aKowoj Indians$xEthnic identity 606 $aKowoj Indians$xAntiquities 606 $aIndian pottery$zGuatemala$zZacpeten Site 606 $aExcavations (Archaeology)$zGuatemala$zZacpeten Site 606 $aEthnology$zGuatemala$zPeten (Dept.) 607 $aZacpete?n Site (Guatemala) 607 $aPeten (Guatemala : Dept.)$xAntiquities 615 0$aKowoj Indians$xHistory. 615 0$aKowoj Indians$xEthnic identity. 615 0$aKowoj Indians$xAntiquities. 615 0$aIndian pottery 615 0$aExcavations (Archaeology) 615 0$aEthnology 676 $a972.81/201 701 $aRice$b Prudence M 701 $aRice$b Don S$g(Don Stephen)$01865429 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910968552403321 996 $aThe Kowoj$94472499 997 $aUNINA
