Conclusion: rethinking community in Sri LankaNotes; Bibliography; Index 330 $a"Focusing on Sri Lanka, this book offers a new perspective on contemporary debates about nationalism in South Asia. It looks at the 'capture' of Buddhism by militant Sinhalese nationalism in the colonial and postcolonial periods, and the framing of subsequent key constitutional legal moments. The book combines the dynamics of constitutionalism with the orbit of historical, political and anthropological scholarship on the cosmology of Sinhalese Buddhism and its relation to Sinhalese Buddhist nationalism. It explores four cases of legal-constitutional moments and offers a unique contribution to the politics and history of devolution in Sri Lanka. The book goes on to examine the way in which Buddhism, and particularly the Asokan state model, may in fact provide the intellectual resources for decentralized government beyond Sri Lanka in other parts of the Theravada Buddhist world, such as Thailand and Burma. Presenting a timely analysis given the intensification of Sri Lanka's civil war since the election in 2005 of President Mahinda Rajapakse on an overtly ultra nationalist Sinhalese Buddhist platform, this book is of interest to scholars of South Asian Studies, anthropology, sociology, ethnicity and political science"--$cProvided by publisher. 410 0$aRoutledge Contemporary South Asia Series 606 $aNationalism$zSri Lanka 606 $aNationalism$zSri Lanka$xReligious aspects$xBuddhism 607 $aSri Lanka$xPolitics and government 615 0$aNationalism 615 0$aNationalism$xReligious aspects$xBuddhism. 676 $a320.54095493 686 $aPOL009000$aPOL022000$2bisacsh 700 $aDe Silva Wijeyeratne$b Roshan.$01537332 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910790582203321 996 $aNation, constitutionalism and Buddhism in Sri Lanka$93786550 997 $aUNINA LEADER 03599nam 2200697Ia 450 001 9910968249203321 005 20251116173241.0 010 $a1-134-82757-1 010 $a0-203-29216-2 010 $a1-280-32515-1 010 $a1-134-82758-X 010 $a0-203-19823-9 024 7 $a10.4324/9780203198230 035 $a(CKB)1000000000254302 035 $a(EBL)168594 035 $a(OCoLC)252787087 035 $a(SSID)ssj0000096956 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)11130579 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000096956 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)10103925 035 $a(PQKB)10667842 035 $a(SSID)ssj0000287906 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)11207948 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000287906 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)10373110 035 $a(PQKB)10988350 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC168594 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL168594 035 $a(CaPaEBR)ebr10057618 035 $a(CaONFJC)MIL32515 035 $a(PPN)198454066 035 $a(EXLCZ)991000000000254302 100 $a19960214d1996 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur|n|---||||| 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 04$aThe actors in Europe's foreign policy /$fedited by Christopher Hill 205 $a1st ed. 210 $aLondon ;$aNew York $cRoutledge$d1996 215 $a1 online resource (329 p.) 300 $aDescription based upon print version of record. 311 08$a0-415-12223-6 311 08$a0-415-12222-8 320 $aIncludes bibliographical references and index. 327 $aCover; The Actors in Europe's Foreign Policy; Copyright; Contents; Contributors; Preface; Introduction: Actors and actions; Part I The major actors; Chapter 1 France: The impact of Franc?ois Mitterrand; Chapter 2 Germany's role in the CFSP: 'Normalita?t' or 'Sonderweg'?; Chapter 3 United Kingdom: Sharpening contradictions; Chapter 4 Regional reassertion: The dilemmas of Italy; Chapter 5 Spain: The uses of foreign policy cooperation; Chapter 6 The Commission: The struggle for legitimacy; Part II The smaller countries 327 $aChapter 7 Belgium: The importance of foreign policy to European political unionChapter 8 Denmark: A new activism in foreign and security policy; Chapter 9 Greece: The limits to convergence; Chapter 10 Ireland and common security: Stretching the limits of commitment?; Chapter 11 Luxembourg: New commitments, new assertiveness; Chapter 12 The Netherlands: The weakening pull of Atlanticism; Chapter 13 Portugal: Pressing for an open Europe; Conclusions: The European rescue of national foreign policy?; Index 330 $aFive years ago observers might have doubted that national foreign policies would continue to be of importance: it seemed inevitable that collective European positions were becoming ever more common and effective. Now the pendulum has swung back with a vengeance. The divided European responses to the prospect of war with Iraq in 1990-91, and to the war in the Balkans have made what happens in the national capitals seem divisive. The Actors in Europe's Foreign Policy is a timely survey of the interplay between the European Union's Common Foreign and Security Policy and the long-estab 606 $aInternational relations 607 $aEurope$xForeign relations$y1989- 615 0$aInternational relations. 676 $a327.4 701 $aHill$b Christopher$f1948-$0323064 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910968249203321 996 $aThe actors in Europe's foreign policy$94494501 997 $aUNINA
