SUMMARY""; ""Data Annex"" 330 3 $aThe Consumer Price Index Manual (2004) provides guidelines for aggregation formulas that are promulgated at IMF training courses and technical assistance missions. This paper develops elementary level aggregation theory to better inform users and compilers. Most countries use either the Dutot or Jevons index formula. These formulas generally give different results; advice on choice of formula matters. Using an approach based on sample estimators, and an illustration based on scanner data, the paper shows how differences in these formulas can be explained by changes in price dispersion and, in turn, by product heterogeneity. Implications for choice of formula are considered. 410 0$aIMF Working Papers; Working Paper ;$vNo. 2006/174 606 $aConsumer price indexes 606 $aPrice indexes 606 $aConsumer price indexes$2imf 606 $aDeflation$2imf 606 $aDemographic Economics: General$2imf 606 $aDemography$2imf 606 $aExpenditure$2imf 606 $aExpenditures, Public$2imf 606 $aIncome economics$2imf 606 $aInflation$2imf 606 $aLabor economics$2imf 606 $aLabor Economics: General$2imf 606 $aLabor$2imf 606 $aLabour$2imf 606 $aMacroeconomics$2imf 606 $aNational Government Expenditures and Related Policies: General$2imf 606 $aPopulation & demography$2imf 606 $aPopulation and demographics$2imf 606 $aPopulation$2imf 606 $aPrice indexes$2imf 606 $aPrice Level$2imf 606 $aPublic finance & taxation$2imf 606 $aPublic Finance$2imf 607 $aUnited Kingdom$2imf 615 0$aConsumer price indexes. 615 0$aPrice indexes. 615 7$aConsumer price indexes 615 7$aDeflation 615 7$aDemographic Economics: General 615 7$aDemography 615 7$aExpenditure 615 7$aExpenditures, Public 615 7$aIncome economics 615 7$aInflation 615 7$aLabor economics 615 7$aLabor Economics: General 615 7$aLabor 615 7$aLabour 615 7$aMacroeconomics 615 7$aNational Government Expenditures and Related Policies: General 615 7$aPopulation & demography 615 7$aPopulation and demographics 615 7$aPopulation 615 7$aPrice indexes 615 7$aPrice Level 615 7$aPublic finance & taxation 615 7$aPublic Finance 700 $aSilver$b Mick$01449453 701 $aHeravi$b Saeed$01816317 801 0$bDcWaIMF 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910968073303321 996 $aWhy Elementary Price Index Number Formulas Differ$94372361 997 $aUNINA
