Newgate was a dreaded prison during this period and its image and reputation coupled to make it the English equivalent of the French Bastille. For those who found themselves incarcerated in Newgate the experience was debilitating and repressive. However, in the case of the radical prisoners it is a curious irony that this repressive environment actually encouraged a fraternal spirit and fertilised a rich production of ideas and literature, which today offers a rare insight into this unique and fascinating culture. Newgate in Revolution reproduces a representative selection of the radical literature published from Newgate, including the first edited version of the prison diary of Thomas Lloyd 606 $aDissenters, Religious$zEngland$zLondon$xHistory$y18th century 606 $aPrisoners' writings, English 606 $2Literary studies: c 1500 to c 1800 615 0$aDissenters, Religious$xHistory 615 0$aPrisoners' writings, English. 676 $a828.608 702 $aDavis$b Michael T.$f1969- 702 $aMcCalman$b Iain 702 $aParolin$b Christina 801 0$bUtOrBLW 801 1$bUtOrBLW 801 2$bUkLoBP 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910968071803321 996 $aNewgate in revolution$94472516 997 $aUNINA
