Inadequacies in the efficacy, safety and production of these antisera have created a major global public health crisis, especially in Africa and Asia. Each year, millions of people are bitten by dogs or snakes or stung by scorpions and the failure to provide antisera costs at least 150,000 lives and at least as many cases of permanent physical handicap. The solution to this crisis demands an international effort to promote transfer of technology to affected countries, to improve standards through the WHO's prequalification scheme and to facilitate distribution of antisera and training of medical personnel in their optimal use.--Publisher's description. 606 $aRabies$xPatients$xMedical care 606 $aRabies$xEpidemiology 606 $aRabies$xChemotherapy 606 $aBites and stings$xPatients$xMedical care 606 $aBites and stings$xEpidemiology 606 $aBites and stings$xChemotherapy 606 $aImmune serums$xTherapeutic use 606 $aDrug utilization 606 $aPoisonous animals$xVenom$xPhysiological effect 615 0$aRabies$xPatients$xMedical care. 615 0$aRabies$xEpidemiology. 615 0$aRabies$xChemotherapy. 615 0$aBites and stings$xPatients$xMedical care. 615 0$aBites and stings$xEpidemiology. 615 0$aBites and stings$xChemotherapy. 615 0$aImmune serums$xTherapeutic use. 615 0$aDrug utilization. 615 0$aPoisonous animals$xVenom$xPhysiological effect. 676 $a614.563 700 $aWarrell$b D.
