Encounters like this occur thousands of times across the United States in nail salons increasingly owned and operated by Asian immigrants. This study looks closely for the first time at these intimate encounters, focusing on New York City, where such nail salons have become ubiquitous. Drawing from rich and compelling interviews, Miliann Kang takes us inside the nail industry, asking such questions as: Why have nail salons become so popular? Why do so many Asian women, and Korean women in particular, provide these services? Kang discovers multiple motivations for the manicure-from the pampering of white middle class women to the artistic self-expression of working class African American women to the mass consumption of body-related services. Contrary to notions of beauty service establishments as spaces for building community among women, The Managed Hand finds that while tentative and fragile solidarities can emerge across the manicure table, they generally give way to even more powerful divisions of race, class, and immigration. 606 $aAsian Americans - Social conditions 606 $aAsian Americans -- Social conditions 606 $aBeauty culture - Social aspects - United States 606 $aBeauty culture -- Social aspects -- United States 606 $aBeauty shops - Social aspects - United States 606 $aBeauty, Personal - Social aspects - United States 606 $aKorean American women - Employment - United States 606 $aKorean American women -- Employment -- United States 606 $aManicuring - Social aspects - United States 606 $aUnited States - Race relations 606 $aUnited States -- Race relations 606 $aWomen immigrants - Employment - United States 606 $aWomen immigrants -- Employment -- United States 606 $aBeauty culture$xSocial aspects$zUnited States 606 $aKorean American women$xEmployment$zUnited States 606 $aWomen immigrants$xEmployment$zUnited States 606 $aNail art (Manicuring)$xSocial aspects$zUnited States 606 $aManicuring$xSocial aspects$zUnited States 606 $aAsian Americans$xSocial conditions 606 $aArt, Architecture & Applied Arts$2HILCC 606 $aArts & Crafts$2HILCC 615 4$aAsian Americans - Social conditions. 615 4$aAsian Americans -- Social conditions. 615 4$aBeauty culture - Social aspects - United States. 615 4$aBeauty culture -- Social aspects -- United States. 615 4$aBeauty shops - Social aspects - United States. 615 4$aBeauty, Personal - Social aspects - United States. 615 4$aKorean American women - Employment - United States. 615 4$aKorean American women -- Employment -- United States. 615 4$aManicuring - Social aspects - United States. 615 4$aUnited States - Race relations. 615 4$aUnited States -- Race relations. 615 4$aWomen immigrants - Employment - United States. 615 4$aWomen immigrants -- Employment -- United States. 615 0$aBeauty culture$xSocial aspects 615 0$aKorean American women$xEmployment 615 0$aWomen immigrants$xEmployment 615 0$aNail art (Manicuring)$xSocial aspects 615 0$aManicuring$xSocial aspects 615 0$aAsian Americans$xSocial conditions. 615 7$aArt, Architecture & Applied Arts 615 7$aArts & Crafts 676 $a391.6 700 $aKang$b Miliann$4aut$4http://id.loc.gov/vocabulary/relators/aut$01854420 801 0$bDE-B1597 801 1$bDE-B1597 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910966936303321 996 $aThe managed hand$94451656 997 $aUNINA LEADER 02636oas 2200937 a 450 001 9910333149703321 005 20251106213014.0 011 $a1873-5940 035 $a(DE-599)ZDB1466385-5 035 $a(DE-599)1466385-5 035 $a(OCoLC)49726036 035 $a(CONSER) 2002242074 035 $a(CKB)110985820565064 035 $a(EXLCZ)99110985820565064 100 $a20020506b20012014 sy a 101 0 $aeng 135 $aurmn||||||||| 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 04$aThe journal of logic and algebraic programming 210 1$a[Amsterdam] ;$a[New York] :$cElsevier Science,$d©2001-©2014. 215 $a1 online resource 300 $aRefereed/Peer-reviewed 311 08$a1567-8326 517 1 $aJ. logic and algebraic programming 606 $aLogic programming$vPeriodicals 606 $aComputer programming$vPeriodicals 606 $aLogic programming$xPeriodicals 606 $aComputer programming$vPeriodicals 606 $aProgrammation logique$xPe?riodiques 606 $aProgrammation (Informatique)$xPe?riodiques 606 $aProgrammation logique$vPe?riodiques 606 $aProgrammation (Informatique)$vPe?riodiques 606 $aComputer programming$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst00872390 606 $aLogic programming$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst01002056 606 $aWiskundige logica$2gtt 606 $aSoftware$2gtt 608 $aPeriodicals.$2fast 615 0$aLogic programming 615 0$aComputer programming 615 0$aLogic programming$xPeriodicals. 615 0$aComputer programming 615 6$aProgrammation logique$xPe?riodiques. 615 6$aProgrammation (Informatique)$xPe?riodiques. 615 6$aProgrammation logique 615 6$aProgrammation (Informatique) 615 7$aComputer programming. 615 7$aLogic programming. 615 17$aWiskundige logica. 615 17$aSoftware. 801 0$bMYG 801 1$bMYG 801 2$bTJC 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bGUA 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bGUA 801 2$bU9S 801 2$bAU@ 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bOCLCO 801 2$bOCLCE 801 2$bOCLCF 801 2$bSHS 801 2$bUKMGB 801 2$bADU 801 2$bW2U 801 2$bCNNAI 801 2$bCUS 801 2$bTXA 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bVT2 801 2$bUAB 801 2$bOCLCQ 801 2$bOCLCO 801 2$bOCLCQ 906 $aJOURNAL 912 $a9910333149703321 996 $aJournal of logic and algebraic programming$91112800 997 $aUNINA
