The Great Game itself has been written about extensively, but never from a Persian angle and from the point of view of the local players in that game. Looking at the territorial consequences of the Great Game for the local players is a unique approach, which deserves a special place in the studies of history, geography, politics and geopolitics of the age of modernity. 410 0$aIslamic Studies Series 606 $aGeopolitics$zAsia, Central 607 $aAfghanistan$xBoundaries 607 $aIran$xBoundaries 607 $aPakistan$xBoundaries 615 0$aGeopolitics 676 $a320.1/2/0958 700 $aMojtahed-Zadeh$b Pirouz$0640441 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910966933603321 996 $aSmall players of the Great Game$94483861 997 $aUNINA LEADER 04607oam 2200601I 450 001 9910957960903321 005 20251116181357.0 010 $a1-351-28042-2 010 $a1-351-28043-0 010 $a1-351-28044-9 010 $a1-909493-67-8 024 7 $a10.4324/9781351280440 035 $a(CKB)2550000001040319 035 $a(EBL)1741660 035 $a(SSID)ssj0000822983 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)11482173 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000822983 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)10761052 035 $a(PQKB)11313818 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC1741660 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL1741660 035 $a(CaPaEBR)ebr10650080 035 $a(OCoLC)681219981 035 $a(OCoLC)1004350343 035 $a(EXLCZ)992550000001040319 100 $a20180706d2017 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur|n|---||||| 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 10$aInterfaces between Science and Society /$fA?ngela Guimara?es Pereira 205 $aFirst edition. 210 1$aLondon :$cTaylor and Francis,$d2017. 215 $a1 online resource (369 p.) 300 $aDescription based upon print version of record. 311 08$a1-874719-97-7 320 $aIncludes bibliographical references and index. 327 $apt. Emerging styles of governance and new ICT. 330 2 $a"The project of science has been to provide answers to questions about the world and how it works. Often, this lofty role has been characterised by a narrow and dogmatic scientific training, an unwillingness to communicate to differing stakeholder needs, a refusal to accept and to manage uncertainty, complexity and value commitments, and the reduction of knowledge assessment to colleague peer review on narrowly technical issues. Times have changed. As the world faces increasingly disparate challenges, science is subjected to increasingly vehement demands from a society calling for transparency, openness and public participation in science policy. Science is going through an evolutionary process. Perhaps the most painful process it has ever encountered.  Research on the interfaces between science and society is a burgeoning area. A new conception of knowledge now appears to be emerging, based on the awareness of complexity, uncertainty and a plurality of legitimate perspectives and interests. Democracy is extending into the previously quite exclusive scientific realm, and science must now submit to public scrutiny and participation in the governance of knowledge. This book provides much-needed reflections on the methods and tools for knowledge quality assurance, particularly on its inputs to extended policy and decision-making processes.  The overall aim is to improve the relationship between science and society. The discussion involves six themes: communicating between plural perspectives; accepting and learning how to manage uncertainty, complexity and value commitments; acknowledging new conceptions of knowledge; implementing transparency, openness and participation in science policy; valuing community-based research; and exploring how new ICT can support inclusive governance. Taken together, these themes provide both a framework and vision on how to conceive, discuss and evaluate the changes that are occurring. The chapters cover theory, practice, approaches, experiences, ideas and suggestions for a move beyond "talking the talk" to "walking the walk".  Science and policy interfaces are dynamic processes needing to permanently redefine themselves and their roles. This book contributes to the enrichment and deepening of our understanding of these important new trends in the social relations of science, which are fundamental to our understanding of the prospects for further progress.  The book will be essential reading for scientists, policy-makers, managers and the public."--Provided by publisher. 606 $aScience$xSocial aspects 615 0$aScience$xSocial aspects. 676 $a303.483 686 $a02.10$2bcl 700 $aPereira$b A?ngela Guimara?es$01880519 701 $aTognetti$b Sylvia$01880520 701 $aVaz$b Sofia Guedes$01873005 801 0$bFlBoTFG 801 1$bFlBoTFG 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910957960903321 996 $aInterfaces between Science and Society$94494527 997 $aUNINA
