From her early teens, Schurman garnered recognition and admiration for her accomplishments in languages, philosophy, poetry, and painting. As an adult she actively engaged in written correspondence and debate with Europe's leading intellectuals. Nevertheless, Schurman refused to regard herself as an anomaly among women. A supporter of the female sex, she argues that the same rigorous education that shaped her should be made available to all Christian daughters of the aristocracy. Gathered here in meticulous translation are Anna Maria van Schurman's defense of women's education, her letters to other learned women, and her own account of her early life, as well as responses to her work from male contemporaries, and rare writings by Schurman's mentor, Voetius. This volume will interest the general reader as well as students of women's, religious, and social history. 410 0$aOther voice in early modern Europe. 606 $aWomen$xReligious aspects$xChristianity 606 $aWomen$xReligious aspects$xChristianity$xHistory of doctrines$y17th century$vSources 606 $aWomen in Christianity 606 $aWomen in the Reformed Church$zEurope$xHistory$y17th century$vSources 606 $aChristian women$xEducation 606 $aReformed Church$xDoctrines 606 $aReformed Church$xDoctrines$xHistory$y17th century$vSources 615 0$aWomen$xReligious aspects$xChristianity. 615 0$aWomen$xReligious aspects$xChristianity$xHistory of doctrines 615 0$aWomen in Christianity. 615 0$aWomen in the Reformed Church$xHistory 615 0$aChristian women$xEducation. 615 0$aReformed Church$xDoctrines. 615 0$aReformed Church$xDoctrines$xHistory 676 $a305.42 700 $aSchurman$b Anna Maria van$f1607-1678.$0889050 701 $aIrwin$b Joyce L$01169063 701 2$aVoet$b Gijsbert$f1589-1676.$0869000 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910966460303321 996 $aWhether a Christian woman should be educated and other writings from her intellectual circle$94351677 997 $aUNINA LEADER 02291nam 2200661Ia 450 001 9910962591203321 005 20200520144314.0 010 $a9786610266678 010 $a9781280266676 010 $a1280266678 010 $a9781423710639 010 $a1423710630 010 $a9781846420016 010 $a1846420016 035 $a(CKB)1000000000032524 035 $a(EBL)290557 035 $a(OCoLC)84374746 035 $a(SSID)ssj0000151637 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)11153789 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000151637 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)10318139 035 $a(PQKB)11742697 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC290557 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL290557 035 $a(CaPaEBR)ebr10082293 035 $a(CaONFJC)MIL26667 035 $a(Perlego)951160 035 $a(EXLCZ)991000000000032524 100 $a20040218d2004 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur|n|---||||| 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 10$aExact mind $ean artist with asperger syndrome /$fSimon Baron-Cohen 205 $a1st ed. 210 $aLondon ;$aPhiladelphia $cJessica Kingsley$d2004 215 $a1 online resource (81 p.) 300 $aDescription based upon print version of record. 311 08$a9781843100324 311 08$a1843100320 320 $aIncludes bibliographical references. 327 $aAn Exact Mind: An Artist with Asperger Syndrome; Contents; Preface; Acknowledgements; 1.
