D. Muhly visited cassiterite (tin ore) mines in the southern Eastern Desert of Egypt. Near the farthest west of these mines, they were shown a group of pharaonic inscriptions by M. F. el-Ramly of the Egyptian Geological Survey and Mining Authority. The inscriptions were photographed, and the photos were given to an Egyptologist to translate. Much later, in 1991, senior author Russell D. Rothe read about the photos in a footnote in an unrelated article. After obtaining copies of the photos from Rapp, he translated the inscriptions with the help of co-author William K. Miller and others. Over the next decade, Rothe, Rapp, and Miller traversed the 60,000-sq.-km area between the Nile and the Red Sea, mostly on foot, photographing inscriptions and systematically surveying the entire region. The results of their investigations of the inscriptional remains found in this vast, mountainous desert are here published for the first time; the corpus will be an important addition to our knowledge of the range and scope of the activities of the ancient Egyptians, especially outside the Nile Valley. 606 $aInschrift$2gnd 606 $aA?gyptisch$2idszbz 606 $aInschrift$2idszbz 606 $aHieroglyphenschrift$2idszbz 606 $aInscriptions, Egyptian$2fast$3(OCoLC)fst01199431 606 $aInscriptions, Egyptian$zEgypt$zEastern Desert 606 $aInscriptions, Egyptian$zEgypt$zEastern Desert 607 $aArabische Wüste$zNord$2gnd 607 $aÄgypten$gAltertum$2gnd 607 $aArabische Wu?ste (A?gypten)$2idszbz 607 $aEgypt$zEastern Desert$2fast 615 7$aInschrift. 615 7$aA?gyptisch. 615 7$aInschrift. 615 7$aHieroglyphenschrift. 615 7$aInscriptions, Egyptian. 615 00$aInscriptions, Egyptian 615 0$aInscriptions, Egyptian 676 $a493/.1 700 $aRothe$b Russell Dale$01853818 701 $aRapp$b George$f1930-$0771894 701 $aMiller$b William K$0174210 801 0$bMdBmJHUP 801 1$bMdBmJHUP 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910966058003321 996 $aPharaonic Inscriptions from the Southern Eastern Desert of Egypt$94450514 997 $aUNINA
