Cox argues that the relationship between faith and skepticism is not an invented conjunction. The recognition of the history of faith and skepticism in the sixteenth century illuminates a tradition that Shakespeare inherited and represented more subtly and effectively than any other writer of his generation. 410 0$aStudies in Christianity and literature ;$v1. 606 $aSkepticism in literature 606 $aKnowledge, Theory of, in literature 615 0$aSkepticism in literature. 615 0$aKnowledge, Theory of, in literature. 676 $a822.3/3 700 $aCox$b John D.$f1945-$0131533 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910965329103321 996 $aSeeming knowledge$9243963 997 $aUNINA LEADER 02635nam 22005293a 450 001 9910227343703321 005 20250203235656.0 010 $a9788202566609 024 7 $a10.23865/noasp.23 035 $a(CKB)4100000000883896 035 $a(OAPEN)638070 035 $a(oapen)https://directory.doabooks.org/handle/20.500.12854/25856 035 $a(ScCtBLL)ba01372d-b2b0-481a-ae43-0ef2209a3c3b 035 $a(ScCtBLL)a96f7929-5774-4db3-9251-b349c75f475e 035 $a(Perlego)2340050 035 $a(oapen)doab25856 035 $a(EXLCZ)994100000000883896 100 $a20250203i20172024 uu 101 0 $aeng 135 $auuuuu---auuuu 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 00$aPrincipled Pragmatism: VOC Interaction with Makassar 1637-68, and the Nature of Company Diplomacy$fCarl Fredrik Feddersen 210 $aOslo$cCappelen Damm Akademisk/NOASP (Nordic Open Access Scholarly Publishing)$d2017 210 1$a[s.l.] :$cCappelen Damm Forskning,$d2017. 215 $a1 online resource (375) 311 08$a9788202566609 311 08$a8202566606 330 $aIn this study of the Dutch East India Company the author uses the Company's seventeenth century diplomatic interaction with the trading Sultanate of Macassar, on the southwestern tip of present day Sulawesi, as a case in cross cultural diplomacy. The author argues that the outlook of the Company's agents both home and overseas was pragmatic, as was the nature of the solutions to the problems they faced. In doing so, the author challenges propositions of Company ethnocentric tunnel vision in its thinking about, and practice of overseas diplomacy. He also run counter with propositions that the communication between Company agents and their Asian friends and foes represented a miscommunication caused by structural cultural barriers. The study is based on analysis of the political language of the Company at the respective levels of operation. 606 $aEarly modern history: c 1450/1500 to c 1700$2bicssc 610 $amakasser 610 $adutch east india company 610 $adiplomacy 610 $avoc 610 $aBuginese people 610 $aCornelis Speelman 610 $aMaluku Islands 610 $aSouth Sulawesi 615 7$aEarly modern history: c 1450/1500 to c 1700 700 $aFeddersen$b Carl Fredrik$01787027 801 0$bScCtBLL 801 1$bScCtBLL 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910227343703321 996 $aPrincipled Pragmatism: VOC Interaction with Makassar 1637-68, and the Nature of Company Diplomacy$94319634 997 $aUNINA
