But how can such a concept be used effectively without a thorough understanding of the way in which organizations produce and distribute knowledge? An in-depth analysis of expert system projects afforded a choice opportunity for studying such questions. Drawing on four case studies, the authors identify and explore the dynamics of three basic types of expertise. They simultaneously reveal the crisis in expertise experienced by firms facing the demands of product variety and innovation. In such industrial contexts, organizational and managerial theories clearly have to include new approaches, presented here, which focus on the dynamics of expertise. 410 3$ade Gruyter Studies in Organization 606 $aExpert systems (Computer science)$xIndustrial applications 606 $aProduction engineering$xAutomation 606 $aExpert systems (Computer science)$xIndustrial applications$vCase studies 615 0$aExpert systems (Computer science)$xIndustrial applications. 615 0$aProduction engineering$xAutomation. 615 0$aExpert systems (Computer science)$xIndustrial applications 676 $a658.5/14 686 $aMS 4850$2rvk 700 $aHatchuel$b Armand$0253393 701 $aWeil$b Benoit$01870506 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910964494203321 996 $aExperts in organizations$94478987 997 $aUNINA
