It is an interdisciplinary study of schooling, childhood, literacy, and protestantism in 16th-century Germany. Luke traces the agenda for the rearing and education of the young as outlined by the Protestant reformers and popularized by the advent of printing. Luther's print-based religious campaign led to his call for universal public schooling to promote literacy -- a fundamental requirement of the new theology. Luke identifies the development of an emergent discourse on childhood in the reformer's tracts, school ordinances, personal correspondences, conduct, and household and medical guides. From a Foucauldian archeological perspective, then, Pedogogy, Printing, and Protestantism examines the conditions that enabled the emergence of early modern discourse on childhood. Carmen Luke is Lecturer in Educational Sociology and Communications at James Cook University of North Queensland. 410 0$aSUNY series in philosophy of education. 606 $aEducation$zGermany$xHistory$y16th century 606 $aChild rearing$zGermany$xHistory$y16th century 606 $aPrinting$zGermany$xHistory$y16th century 606 $aPrinting$xSocial aspects$zGermany 606 $aProtestant churches$zGermany$xHistory$y16th century 606 $aReformation$zGermany 606 $aTechnology and civilization 607 $aGermany$xChurch history$y16th century 615 0$aEducation$xHistory 615 0$aChild rearing$xHistory 615 0$aPrinting$xHistory 615 0$aPrinting$xSocial aspects 615 0$aProtestant churches$xHistory 615 0$aReformation 615 0$aTechnology and civilization. 676 $a370/.943 700 $aLuke$b Carmen$01865734 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910964408903321 996 $aPedagogy, printing, and Protestantism$94476910 997 $aUNINA
