From her early teens, Schurman garnered recognition and admiration for her accomplishments in languages, philosophy, poetry, and painting. As an adult she actively engaged in written correspondence and debate with Europe's leading intellectuals. Nevertheless, Schurman refused to regard herself as an anomaly among women. A supporter of the female sex, she argues that the same rigorous education that shaped her should be made available to all Christian daughters of the aristocracy. Gathered here in meticulous translation are Anna Maria van Schurman's defense of women's education, her letters to other learned women, and her own account of her early life, as well as responses to her work from male contemporaries, and rare writings by Schurman's mentor, Voetius. This volume will interest the general reader as well as students of women's, religious, and social history. 410 0$aOther voice in early modern Europe. 606 $aWomen$xReligious aspects$xChristianity 606 $aWomen$xReligious aspects$xChristianity$xHistory of doctrines$y17th century$vSources 606 $aWomen in Christianity 606 $aWomen in the Reformed Church$zEurope$xHistory$y17th century$vSources 606 $aChristian women$xEducation 606 $aReformed Church$xDoctrines 606 $aReformed Church$xDoctrines$xHistory$y17th century$vSources 615 0$aWomen$xReligious aspects$xChristianity. 615 0$aWomen$xReligious aspects$xChristianity$xHistory of doctrines 615 0$aWomen in Christianity. 615 0$aWomen in the Reformed Church$xHistory 615 0$aChristian women$xEducation. 615 0$aReformed Church$xDoctrines. 615 0$aReformed Church$xDoctrines$xHistory 676 $a305.42 700 $aSchurman$b Anna Maria van$f1607-1678.$0889050 701 $aIrwin$b Joyce L$01169063 701 2$aVoet$b Gijsbert$f1589-1676.$0869000 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910966460303321 996 $aWhether a Christian woman should be educated and other writings from her intellectual circle$94351677 997 $aUNINA LEADER 03121nam 2200661Ia 450 001 9910963764503321 005 20240416180848.0 010 $a9786612402128 010 $a9781282402126 010 $a1282402129 010 $a9789048510948 010 $a9048510945 035 $a(CKB)1000000000807731 035 $a(EBL)474307 035 $a(OCoLC)475679649 035 $a(SSID)ssj0000344681 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)11273697 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000344681 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)10306978 035 $a(PQKB)11571657 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC3327148 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC474307 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL3327148 035 $a(CaPaEBR)ebr10346726 035 $a(CaONFJC)MIL240212 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL474307 035 $a(EXLCZ)991000000000807731 100 $a20090925d2009 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur|n|---||||| 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 10$aXenophobia in seventeenth-century India /$fGijs Kruijtzer 205 $a1.
