The employment rates of Arab immigrant women rank among the lowest of any immigrant group, while the rates of native-born Arab-American women resemble those of U.S.-born white women. These differences cannot be explained by Arab-American women s human capital characteristics or family resources, but are due to traditional cultural norms that prioritize women s family obligations over their economic activity and to ethnic and religious social networks that encourage the maintenance of traditional gender roles. Read s findings challenge assumptions about variations in ethnic women s labor force participation. Arab cultural valuesplay an important role in determining the position of women of Arab descent inAmerican society." 410 0$aNew Americans (LFB Scholarly Publishing LLC) 606 $aArab American women$xSocial conditions 606 $aArab American women$xEmployment 606 $aWomen immigrants$zUnited States$xSocial conditions 606 $aWomen foreign workers$zUnited States 606 $aLabor supply$zUnited States 606 $aSex role$zUnited States 606 $aArab Americans$xEthnic identity 606 $aArab Americans$xCultural assimilation 615 0$aArab American women$xSocial conditions. 615 0$aArab American women$xEmployment. 615 0$aWomen immigrants$xSocial conditions. 615 0$aWomen foreign workers 615 0$aLabor supply 615 0$aSex role 615 0$aArab Americans$xEthnic identity. 615 0$aArab Americans$xCultural assimilation. 676 $a331.4/089/927073 700 $aRead$b Jen'nan Ghazal$f1972-$01866650 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910962821003321 996 $aCulture, class, and work among Arab-American women$94474064 997 $aUNINA
