We find that banks, on average, could save 20-30 percent of their total costs if they were operating efficiently, and that foreign banks are more efficient than public banks and domestic private banks. Among the factors that could affect the efficiency levels are macroeconomic stability, depth of financial development, the degree of market competition, strong legal rights and contract laws, and better governance, including political stability and government effectiveness. Our findings point to the importance of policies that aim to build stronger institutions, promote more competition, and improve governance. 410 0$aIMF Working Papers; Working Paper ;$vNo. 2009/014 606 $aBanks and banking$zAfrica, Sub-Saharan 606 $aEconomic development$zAfrica, Sub-Saharan 606 $aBank deposits$2imf 606 $aBanking$2imf 606 $aBanks and Banking$2imf 606 $aBanks and banking$2imf 606 $aBanks and banking, Foreign$2imf 606 $aBanks$2imf 606 $aCommercial banks$2imf 606 $aCompetition$2imf 606 $aCorporate Finance and Governance$2imf 606 $aDepository Institutions$2imf 606 $aEconomic Development: Financial Markets$2imf 606 $aFinance$2imf 606 $aFinance: General$2imf 606 $aFinancial institutions$2imf 606 $aFinancial markets$2imf 606 $aFinancial services$2imf 606 $aForeign banks$2imf 606 $aGeneral Financial Markets: General (includes Measurement and Data)$2imf 606 $aLegal support in revenue administration$2imf 606 $aMicro Finance Institutions$2imf 606 $aMortgages$2imf 606 $aPublic finance & taxation$2imf 606 $aPublic Finance$2imf 606 $aRevenue administration$2imf 606 $aRevenue$2imf 606 $aSaving and Capital Investment$2imf 606 $aTaxation, Subsidies, and Revenue: General$2imf 607 $aSouth Africa$2imf 615 0$aBanks and banking 615 0$aEconomic development 615 7$aBank deposits 615 7$aBanking 615 7$aBanks and Banking 615 7$aBanks and banking 615 7$aBanks and banking, Foreign 615 7$aBanks 615 7$aCommercial banks 615 7$aCompetition 615 7$aCorporate Finance and Governance 615 7$aDepository Institutions 615 7$aEconomic Development: Financial Markets 615 7$aFinance 615 7$aFinance: General 615 7$aFinancial institutions 615 7$aFinancial markets 615 7$aFinancial services 615 7$aForeign banks 615 7$aGeneral Financial Markets: General (includes Measurement and Data) 615 7$aLegal support in revenue administration 615 7$aMicro Finance Institutions 615 7$aMortgages 615 7$aPublic finance & taxation 615 7$aPublic Finance 615 7$aRevenue administration 615 7$aRevenue 615 7$aSaving and Capital Investment 615 7$aTaxation, Subsidies, and Revenue: General 676 $a332.1 700 $aChen$b Chuling$01816013 712 02$aInternational Monetary Fund. 801 0$bDcWaIMF 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910961922703321 996 $aBank Efficiency in Sub-Saharan African Middle Income Countries$94371655 997 $aUNINA
