Using panel data of Japanese exporting firms, we examine the sources of the export surge during this period. One view argues that the so-called "divine wind" or exogenous external demand boosted Japanese exports. The other view emphasizes the role of supply factors such as productivity gains, materialized after long-fought restructuring efforts during the lost decade. Estimating the firm-level export function allows us to assess the relative importance of these demand and supply factors. Evidence shows that firms' efforts were more important than the divine wind. 410 0$aIMF Working Papers; Working Paper ;$vNo. 2012/171 606 $aExports$zJapan 606 $aCapacity$2imf 606 $aCapital and Total Factor Productivity$2imf 606 $aCost$2imf 606 $aEmpirical Studies of Trade$2imf 606 $aExport performance$2imf 606 $aExports and Imports$2imf 606 $aExports$2imf 606 $aFinancial Markets and the Macroeconomy$2imf 606 $aIndustrial productivity$2imf 606 $aIndustry Studies: Transportation and Utilities: General$2imf 606 $aInfrastructure$2imf 606 $aInnovation$2imf 606 $aIntellectual Property Rights: General$2imf 606 $aInternational economics$2imf 606 $aInternational trade$2imf 606 $aMacroeconomics$2imf 606 $aMacroeconomics: Production$2imf 606 $aNational accounts$2imf 606 $aProduction and Operations Management$2imf 606 $aProduction$2imf 606 $aProductivity$2imf 606 $aResearch and Development$2imf 606 $aSaving and investment$2imf 606 $aTechnological Change$2imf 606 $aTotal factor productivity$2imf 606 $aTrade: General$2imf 606 $aTransportation$2imf 607 $aJapan$xEconomic conditions$y1989- 607 $aChina, People's Republic of$2imf 615 0$aExports 615 7$aCapacity 615 7$aCapital and Total Factor Productivity 615 7$aCost 615 7$aEmpirical Studies of Trade 615 7$aExport performance 615 7$aExports and Imports 615 7$aExports 615 7$aFinancial Markets and the Macroeconomy 615 7$aIndustrial productivity 615 7$aIndustry Studies: Transportation and Utilities: General 615 7$aInfrastructure 615 7$aInnovation 615 7$aIntellectual Property Rights: General 615 7$aInternational economics 615 7$aInternational trade 615 7$aMacroeconomics 615 7$aMacroeconomics: Production 615 7$aNational accounts 615 7$aProduction and Operations Management 615 7$aProduction 615 7$aProductivity 615 7$aResearch and Development 615 7$aSaving and investment 615 7$aTechnological Change 615 7$aTotal factor productivity 615 7$aTrade: General 615 7$aTransportation 676 $a332.1/52 700 $aTokutsu$b Ichiro$01815799 701 $aOgawa$b Kazuo$f1954-$01815910 701 $aSaito$b Mika$01815800 801 0$bDcWaIMF 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910961753203321 996 $aJapan out of the Lost Decade$94371531 997 $aUNINA
