One specific type of stem cell, the hematopoietic progenitor cell (HPC), which is derived from umbilical cord blood (as well as adult bone marrow and mobilized peripheral blood), holds particular promise. To make the most of these HPCs, the Institute of Medicine was asked to consider the optimal structure for a national cord blood program and to address pertinent issues related to maximizing the potential of stem cell technology. Cord Blood: Establishing a National Hematopoietic Stem Cell Bank Program examines: The role of cord blood in stem cell transplantation The current status of blood banks already in existence The optimal structure for the cord blood program The current use and utility of cord blood for stem cell transplants The best way to advance the use of cord blood units and make them available for research Expert advice from leaders in the fields of economics, public health, medicine, and biostatistics combine to make this very timely and topical book useful to a number of stakeholders. 606 $aFetal blood$xTransplantation 606 $aHematopoietic stem cells 606 $aBlood banks 606 $aCord Blood Stem Cell Transplantation$xstandards 606 $aBlood Banks$xorganization & administration 606 $aBlood Grouping and Crossmatching$xstandards 606 $aHematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation$xethics 606 $aHematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation$xlegislation & jurisprudence 606 $aHematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation$xstandards 615 0$aFetal blood$xTransplantation. 615 0$aHematopoietic stem cells. 615 0$aBlood banks. 615 2$aCord Blood Stem Cell Transplantation$xstandards. 615 2$aBlood Banks$xorganization & administration. 615 2$aBlood Grouping and Crossmatching$xstandards. 615 2$aHematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation$xethics. 615 2$aHematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation$xlegislation & jurisprudence. 615 2$aHematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation$xstandards. 676 $a362.17/84 701 $aMeyer$b Emily Ann$01803825 701 $aHanna$b Kathi E$01093170 701 $aGebbie$b Kristine M$01806547 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910961526203321 996 $aCord blood$94355788 997 $aUNINA
