Although numerous studies have examined the functional range of individual verbal categories in this language, this work is the first attempt to approach this problem from an overall, systemic perspective. With insights from formal semantics and linguistic typology, the author demonstrates that aspect represents a grammatically relevant semantic dimension on a par with tense in the Early Vedic verbal system, thereby indicating that the language has preserved an aspectual opposition similar to the one found in Homeric Greek. Apart from these general findings, the book provides a theoretical framework designed for exploring inflectional semantics in dead languages. 410 0$aBrill's studies in Indo-European languages & linguistics ;$v5. 606 $aVedic language$xEtymology 606 $aVedic language$xGrammar 606 $aVedic language$xSemantics, Historical 615 0$aVedic language$xEtymology. 615 0$aVedic language$xGrammar. 615 0$aVedic language$xSemantics, Historical. 676 $a491/.29 700 $aDahl$b Eystein$01787054 801 0$bNL-LeKB 801 1$bNL-LeKB 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910960771903321 996 $aTime, tense and aspect in early Vedic gramma r$94319673 997 $aUNINA
