The analysis reveals that oil-rich Africa lags behind other oil-exporters in terms of diversification, global market share and the overall investment climate. The poor performance of their nonoil sector can be largely attributed to weak infrastructure and institutional quality. The results also show that institutional quality is a significant determinant of the extent to which oil abundance affects the competitiveness of the non-oil sector; thereby explaining the divergent experiences of oil-rich economies across the world. This implies that oil wealth does not necessarily weaken the non-oil tradable sector; countries may mitigate the impact of Dutch disease and benefit from oil booms if revenues are used prudently to reduce oil dependence. 410 0$aIMF Working Papers; Working Paper ;$vNo. 2008/172 606 $aPetroleum industry and trade$zAfrica, Sub-Saharan$xEconometric models 606 $aCompetition$xEconometric models$zAfrica, Sub-Saharan 606 $aEnergy: General$2imf 606 $aExport performance$2imf 606 $aExports and Imports$2imf 606 $aExports$2imf 606 $aInternational economics$2imf 606 $aInternational Trade Organizations$2imf 606 $aInvestment & securities$2imf 606 $aInvestments: Energy$2imf 606 $aMacroeconomics$2imf 606 $aOil exports$2imf 606 $aOil$2imf 606 $aPetroleum industry and trade$2imf 606 $aReal exports$2imf 606 $aTrade Policy$2imf 606 $aTrade: General$2imf 607 $aAfrica, Sub-Saharan$xEconomic conditions$xEconometric models 607 $aCôte d'Ivoire$2imf 615 0$aPetroleum industry and trade$xEconometric models. 615 0$aCompetition$xEconometric models 615 7$aEnergy: General 615 7$aExport performance 615 7$aExports and Imports 615 7$aExports 615 7$aInternational economics 615 7$aInternational Trade Organizations 615 7$aInvestment & securities 615 7$aInvestments: Energy 615 7$aMacroeconomics 615 7$aOil exports 615 7$aOil 615 7$aPetroleum industry and trade 615 7$aReal exports 615 7$aTrade Policy 615 7$aTrade: General 676 $a338.27282 700 $aQureshi$b Mahvash$01815976 801 0$bDcWaIMF 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910960623303321 996 $aAfrica?s Oil Abundance and External Competitiveness$94372828 997 $aUNINA
