Jamal J. Elias corrects this view by revealing the complexity of Islamic attitudes toward representational religious art. Aisha's Cushion emphasizes Islam's perceptual and intellectual modes and in so doing offers the reader both insight into Islamic visual culture and a unique way of seeing the world. Aisha's Cushion evaluates the controversies surrounding blasphemy and iconoclasm by exploring Islamic societies at the time of Muhammad and the birth of Islam; during early contact between Arab Muslims and Byzantine Christians; in medieval Anatolia and India; and in modern times. Elias's inquiry then goes further, to situate Islamic religious art in a global context. His comparisons with Christian, Jewish, Buddhist, and Hindu attitudes toward religious art show them to be as contradictory as those of Islam. Contemporary theories about art's place in society inform Elias's investigation of how religious objects have been understood across time and in different cultures. Elias contends that Islamic perspectives on representation and perception should be sought not only in theological writings or aesthetic treatises but in a range of Islamic works in areas as diverse as optics, alchemy, dreaming, calligraphy, literature, vehicle and home decoration, and Sufi metaphysics. Unearthing shades of meaning in Islamic thought throughout history, Elias offers fresh insight into the relations among religion, art, and perception across a broad range of cultures. 606 $aIslam and art 606 $aArts$zIslamic countries 615 0$aIslam and art. 615 0$aArts 676 $a709.1767 700 $aElias$b Jamal J$01008835 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910960278903321 996 $aAisha's cushion$94360995 997 $aUNINA LEADER 02978nam 2200721Ia 450 001 9910960793803321 005 20251116191646.0 010 $a1-134-91647-7 010 $a1-134-91648-5 010 $a1-280-28037-9 010 $a9786610280377 010 $a0-203-99350-0 024 7 $a10.4324/9780203993507 035 $a(CKB)1000000000361191 035 $a(EBL)254436 035 $a(OCoLC)275351029 035 $a(SSID)ssj0000160584 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)11161288 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000160584 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)10183515 035 $a(PQKB)10447393 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC254436 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL254436 035 $a(CaPaEBR)ebr10166256 035 $a(CaONFJC)MIL28037 035 $a(OCoLC)252752775 035 $a(OCoLC)1298603221 035 $a(FINmELB)ELB154167 035 $a(EXLCZ)991000000000361191 100 $a19950824d1996 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur|n|---||||| 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 00$aGambling cultures $estudies in history and interpretation /$fedited by Jan McMillen 205 $a1st ed. 210 $aLondon ;$aNew York $cRoutledge$d1996 215 $a1 online resource (313 p.) 225 1 $aCulture 300 $aDescription based upon print version of record. 311 08$a0-415-75581-6 311 08$a0-415-06820-7 320 $aIncludes bibliographical references and index. 327 $aBook Cover; Half-Title; Series Title; Title; Copyright; CONTENTS; ILLUSTRATIONS; CONTRIBUTORS; INTRODUCTION; 1 UNDERSTANDING GAMBLING; 2 GAMBLING AND THE LEGALISATION OF VICE; 3 SOCIAL EVIL OR SOCIAL GOOD?; 4 ILLEGAL BETTING IN BRITAIN AND AUSTRALIA; 5 WHEN IT'S BAD IT'S BETTER; 6 REPRESENTATIONS OF GAMBLING IN AUSTRALIAN POPULAR CULTURE; 7 BINGO IN BRITAIN; 8 WHY 'SLOTS' EQUALS 'GRIND' IN ANY LANGUAGE; 9 GAMBLING IN CAMEROON AND SENEGAL; 10 THE ROLE OF THE STATE IN THE EXPANSION AND GROWTH OF COMMERCIAL GAMBLING IN THE USA; 11 A SIGN OF THE TIMES 327 $a12 THE MEDICALISATION OF GAMBLING AS AN 'ADDICTION'13 ETHICAL AND POLICY CONSIDERATIONS IN THE SPREAD OF COMMERCIAL GAMBLING; 14 FROM GLAMOUR TO GRIND; 15 OBJECTIVES AND SYSTEMS IN THE REGULATION OF COMMERCIAL GAMBLING; INDEX 330 $aA study of modern gambling as it has emerged as a commercial industry, which analyzes the ambiguous relationship between morality and risk taking and examines the contradictory stances of governments. 410 0$aCulture. 606 $aGambling 606 $aGambling$xEconomic aspects 606 $aGambling$xGovernment policy 615 0$aGambling. 615 0$aGambling$xEconomic aspects. 615 0$aGambling$xGovernment policy. 676 $a306.482 701 $aMcMillen$b Jan$f1940-$01880580 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910960793803321 996 $aGambling cultures$94494619 997 $aUNINA
