This study examines the relation of imagination to reason and to human knowledge and action in general. Moving simultaneously at several different hermeneutical levels, Sallis carries out an interpretation of the Transcendental Dialectic of Kant's Critique of Pure Reason. Although, in contrast to the Analytic, the Dialectic seldom refers explicitly to imagination, Sallis shows that the concept of reason in the Dialectic requires the complicity of imagination. Sallis demonstrates that for Kant, reason alone does not suffice for bringing before our minds the metaphysical ideas of the soul, the world, and God; rather it is through the force of imagination that these ideas are brought forth and made effective. A new preface situates the book in relation to Sallis's later work, and an extensive afterword focuses on Kant and the Greeks. 410 0$aSUNY series in contemporary continental philosophy. 606 $aDialectic 606 $aImagination 606 $aKnowledge, Theory of 606 $aReason 606 $aTranscendentalism 615 0$aDialectic. 615 0$aImagination. 615 0$aKnowledge, Theory of. 615 0$aReason. 615 0$aTranscendentalism. 676 $a121 700 $aSallis$b John$f1938-$0153474 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910971683503321 996 $aGathering of reason$9470686 997 $aUNINA LEADER 02393oam 22006014a 450 001 9910960231203321 005 20220208010250.0 010 $a9780813943886 010 $a0813943884 035 $a(CKB)4100000010134874 035 $a(OCoLC)1117314228 035 $a(MdBmJHUP)muse83358 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC6031612 035 $a(Perlego)1250178 035 $a(EXLCZ)994100000010134874 100 $a20190827d2020 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur|||||||nn|n 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 10$aColonizing the Past $eMythmaking and Pre-Columbian Whites in Nineteenth-Century American Writing /$fEdward Watts 205 $aFirst edition. 210 1$aLondon :$cUniversity of Virginia Press,$d2020. 210 3$aBaltimore, Md. :$cProject MUSE,$d2020 210 4$dİ2020. 215 $a1 online resource 311 08$a9780813943862 311 08$a0813943868 320 $aIncludes bibliographical references and index. 327 $aIntroduction: The Primordial Nation -- Welsh Indians in the Early Republic -- The Lost Tribes and the Found Nation -- The White Mound Builders and the Lessons of Prehistory -- Dwarf Epics and the Ancient Irish -- The Norse Forefathers of the American Empire 330 $a"This book examines nineteenth-century myths of pre-Colombian whites in the United States, as well as literary satires of those myths by authors such as Washington Irving and Mark Twain"--$cProvided by publisher. 606 $aMythology in literature 606 $aColonies in literature 606 $aWhite people in literature 606 $aNational characteristics, American, in literature 606 $aImperialism in literature 606 $aAmerican literature$y19th century$xHistory and criticism 607 $aAmerica$xIn literature 615 0$aMythology in literature. 615 0$aColonies in literature. 615 0$aWhite people in literature. 615 0$aNational characteristics, American, in literature. 615 0$aImperialism in literature. 615 0$aAmerican literature$xHistory and criticism. 676 $a810.9/3587001 700 $aWatts$b Edward$f1964-$01813256 801 0$bMdBmJHUP 801 1$bMdBmJHUP 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910960231203321 996 $aColonizing the Past$94366177 997 $aUNINA
