Schnitzler sich erkenntnisbereit auf die geschichtliche Situation besinnen und sie zu verdichten suchen, während der hohle Heroismus der völkisch-nationalsozialistischen Kriegsliteratur den zeitlichen und gesellschaftlichen Bedingungen der dargestellten Gegenwart ausweicht. An der Haltung des Frontsoldaten dieser Romane wird der Ansatz für den politischen Mystizismus des Nationalsozialismus sichtbar.
