This book draws on new research on Hindu-Muslim conflict in India to address this important question. Ashutosh Varshney examines three pairs of Indian cities-one city in each pair with a history of communal violence, the other with a history of relative communal harmony-to discern why violence between Hindus and Muslims occurs in some situations but not others. His findings will be of strong interest to scholars, politicians, and policymakers of South Asia, but the implications of his study have theoretical and practical relevance for a broad range of multiethnic societies in other areas of the world as well. The book focuses on the networks of civic engagement that bring Hindu and Muslim urban communities together. Strong associational forms of civic engagement, such as integrated business organizations, trade unions, political parties, and professional associations, are able to control outbreaks of ethnic violence, Varshney shows. Vigorous and communally integrated associational life can serve as an agent of peace by restraining those, including powerful politicians, who would polarize Hindus and Muslims along communal lines. 606 $aCommunalism$zIndia 606 $aEthnic conflict$zIndia 606 $aHindus$zIndia 606 $aMuslims$zIndia 607 $aIndia$xPolitics and government$y1947- 615 0$aCommunalism 615 0$aEthnic conflict 615 0$aHindus 615 0$aMuslims 676 $a954/.0088/2971 700 $aVarshney$b Ashutosh$f1957-$01876248 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910958456403321 996 $aEthnic conflict and civic life$94528812 997 $aUNINA LEADER 00801nam 2200277 450 001 996702878503316 005 20260119171853.0 100 $a20260119d1962----km y0itay5003 ba 101 0 $aita 102 $aIT 105 $ay 00 y 200 1 $aCose lette$fWalter Bigiavi 210 $aPadova$cCEDAM$d1962 215 $a5 p.$d25 cm 300 $aContiene: Universitą; Avvocati; Avvocato e giudice ... 300 $aEstratto da: Rivista di diritto civile, anno 8, n. 3 (1962) 606 0 $aAvvocati [e] Giudici$xRecensioni$2BNCF 676 $a344.45012 700 1$aBIGIAVI,$bWalter$0437429 801 0$aIT$bcba$gREICAT 912 $a996702878503316 951 $aXVI.7.Misc. 1566$b1591 FBUO$cXVI.7.Misc. 959 $aBK 969 $aFBUO 996 $aCose lette$94528306 997 $aUNISA
