Yet there is still a large gap between the outcomes in developing and developed countries. This book addresses the steps needed to reduce that gap. It reviews the available statistics of low birth weight, prematurity, and birth defects; reviews current knowledge and practices of a healthy pregnancy, identifies cost-effective opportunities for improving birth outcomes and supporting families with an infant handicapped by birth problems, and recommens priority research, capacity building, and institutional and global efforts to reduce adverse birth outcomes in developing countries. The committee has based its study on data and information from several developing countries, and provides recommendations that can assist the March of Dimes, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and NIH in tailoring their international program and forging new partnerships to reduce the mortality and morbidity associated with adverse birth outcomes. 606 $aNewborn infants$zDeveloping countries$xMortality$xPrevention 606 $aNewborn infants$xDiseases$zDeveloping countries$xPrevention 606 $aFetal death$zDeveloping countries$xPrevention 606 $aFetus$xDiseases$zDeveloping countries$xPrevention 606 $aMothers$zDeveloping countries$xMortality$xPrevention 606 $aInfant health services$zDeveloping countries 606 $aMaternal health services$zDeveloping countries 606 $aPregnancy$xComplications$zDeveloping countries$xPrevention 606 $aMothers$xMortality 606 $aPregnancy Outcome$3(DNLM)D011256 606 $aPregnancy Complications$xprevention & control$3(DNLM)D011248Q00517 606 $aInfant Mortality$3(DNLM)D007226 606 $aMaternal Mortality$3(DNLM)D008428 606 $aDeveloping Countries$3(DNLM)D003906 615 0$aNewborn infants$xMortality$xPrevention. 615 0$aNewborn infants$xDiseases$xPrevention. 615 0$aFetal death$xPrevention. 615 0$aFetus$xDiseases$xPrevention. 615 0$aMothers$xMortality$xPrevention. 615 0$aInfant health services 615 0$aMaternal health services 615 0$aPregnancy$xComplications$xPrevention. 615 0$aMothers$xMortality. 615 12$aPregnancy Outcome. 615 12$aPregnancy Complications$xprevention & control. 615 22$aInfant Mortality. 615 22$aMaternal Mortality. 615 22$aDeveloping Countries. 676 $a362.1/989201/091724 701 $aBale$b Judith R$01802510 701 $aStoll$b Barbara J$01802511 701 $aLucas$b Adetokunbo O$01802512 712 02$aInstitute of Medicine (U.S.).$bCommittee on Improving Birth Outcomes. 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910957109503321 996 $aImproving birth outcomes$94348409 997 $aUNINA
