During that time the Arrernte were the subject of intense curiosity, and the earliest accounts of their lives, beliefs, and traditions were a seminal influence on European notions of the primitive. The first study to address the Arrernte's contemporary situation, Arrernte Present, Arrernte Past also documents the immense sociocultural changes they have experienced over the past hundred years. Employing ethnographic and archival research, Diane Austin-Broos traces the history of the Arrernte as they have transitioned from a society of hunter-gatherers to members of the Hermannsburg Mission community to their present, marginalized position in the modern Australian economy. While she concludes that these wrenching structural shifts led to the violence that now marks Arrernte communities, she also brings to light the powerful acts of imagination that have sustained a continuing sense of Arrernte identity. 606 $aAranda (Australian people)$xMissions$zAustralia$zHermannsburg Region (N.T.) 606 $aAranda (Australian people)$xLand tenure 606 $aAranda (Australian people)$xCultural assimilation 606 $aLutherans$xMissions$zAustralia$zHermannsburg Region (N.T.)$xHistory 606 $aLand reform$zAustralia$zHermannsburg Region (N.T.)$xHistory 606 $aArrernte people C8$2aiatsiss 607 $aHermannsburg Region (N.T.)$xRace relations 607 $aHermannsburg Region (N.T.)$xSocial conditions 607 $aNtaria / Hermannsburg (South Central NT SF53-13)$2aiatsisp 607 $aKaporilja (South Central NT SF53-13)$2aiatsisp 615 0$aAranda (Australian people)$xMissions 615 0$aAranda (Australian people)$xLand tenure. 615 0$aAranda (Australian people)$xCultural assimilation. 615 0$aLutherans$xMissions$xHistory. 615 0$aLand reform$xHistory. 615 7$aArrernte people C8. 676 $a305.899/915 700 $aAustin-Broos$b Diane J$01143986 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910956351703321 996 $aArrernte present, Arrernte past$94367985 997 $aUNINA LEADER 03487nam 2200649Ia 450 001 9910954078203321 005 20251116204148.0 010 $a1-134-49227-8 010 $a1-134-49228-6 010 $a0-415-26883-4 010 $a1-280-04783-6 010 $a0-203-16655-8 024 7 $a10.4324/9780203166550 035 $a(CKB)1000000000443008 035 $a(SSID)ssj0000288356 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)11205238 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000288356 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)10372444 035 $a(PQKB)10205625 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC180676 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL180676 035 $a(CaPaEBR)ebr10165642 035 $a(CaONFJC)MIL4783 035 $a(OCoLC)437083503 035 $a(OCoLC)958103968 035 $a(EXLCZ)991000000000443008 100 $a20040209d2003 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aurcn||||||||| 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 10$aAfrican American literacies /$fElaine Richardson 205 $a1st ed. 210 $aLondon $cRoutledge$d2003 215 $axiii, 177 p. $cill 225 1 $aLiteracies 300 $aBibliographic Level Mode of Issuance: Monograph 311 08$a0-415-26882-6 311 08$a0-203-28171-3 320 $aIncludes bibliographical references (pages [160]-173) and index. 327 $a1. Drawing on personal experience, Elaine Richardson provides a compelling account of the language and literacy practices of African-American students. The book analyses the problems encountered by the teachers of AAVE speakers, and offers African American centred theories and pedagogical methods of addressing these problems. Richardson builds on recent research to argue that teachers need not only to recognise the value and importance of African-American culture, but also to use African-American English when teaching AAVE speakers standard English. African-American Literacies offers a holistic and culturally relevant approach to literacy education, and is essential reading for anyone with an interest in the literacy practices of African-American students. 410 0$aLiteracies. 606 $aEnglish language$xStudy and teaching$xAfrican American students 606 $aLiteracy$xStudy and teaching 615 0$aEnglish language$xStudy and teaching$xAfrican American students. 615 0$aLiteracy$xStudy and teaching. 676 $a371.8296073 700 $aRichardson$b Elaine B.$f1960-$01845915 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910954078203321 996 $aAfrican American literacies$94498250 997 $aUNINA
