The syncretism practiced here has led the Totonac and Nahua people to identify Christ with the Sun God, a belief expressed symbolically in ritual practices such as the Dance of the Voladores.Spanning the four centuries from the earliest systematic campaign against Nahua ritual practices - Zuma?rraga's idolatry trials of 1536-1540 - to the twentieth century, Stresser-Pe?an contextualizes Nahua and Totonac ritual practices as a series of responses to Christian evangelization and the social reproduction of traditional ritual practices. The Sun God and the Savior is a monumental work on the ethnographic and historical knowledge of the peoples of the Sierra Norte. 606 $aNahuas$zMexico$zPuebla (State)$xReligion 606 $aNahuas$xMissions$zMexico$zPuebla (State) 606 $aNahuas$zMexico$zPuebla (State)$xRites and ceremonies 606 $aTotonac Indians$zMexico$zPuebla (State)$xReligion 606 $aTotonac Indians$xMissions$zMexico$zPuebla (State) 606 $aTotonac Indians$zMexico$zPuebla (State)$xRites and ceremonies 606 $aChristianity and culture$zMexico$zPuebla (State) 606 $aChristianity and other religions$zMexico$zPuebla (State) 606 $aSyncretism (Religion)$zMexico$zPuebla (State) 607 $aPuebla (Mexico : State)$xReligious life and customs 607 $aPuebla (Mexico : State)$xSocial life and customs 615 0$aNahuas$xReligion. 615 0$aNahuas$xMissions 615 0$aNahuas$xRites and ceremonies. 615 0$aTotonac Indians$xReligion. 615 0$aTotonac Indians$xMissions 615 0$aTotonac Indians$xRites and ceremonies. 615 0$aChristianity and culture 615 0$aChristianity and other religions 615 0$aSyncretism (Religion) 676 $a207/.20899707248 700 $aStresser-Pean$b Guy$0399889 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910956230903321 996 $aThe sun god and the savior$94360047 997 $aUNINA
