But causality operates in both directions, as a well functioning financial system can enable a society to invest in more productive but risky projects, thereby determining the degree of economic diversification. Thus, ordinary least squares (OLS) estimates of the impact of economic diversification on financial development are likely to be biased. Motivated by the economic geography literature, this paper uses instruments derived from topographical characteristics to estimate the impact of economic diversification on the development of finance. The fourth estimates suggest a large and robust role for diversification in shaping financial development. And these results imply that, by impeding financial sector development, the concentration of economic activity common in developing countries can adversely affect financial and economic development. 410 0$aIMF Working Papers; Working Paper ;$vNo. 2006/035 606 $aEconomic development$xEconometric models 606 $aFinance$xEconometric models 606 $aBank deposits$2imf 606 $aBanking$2imf 606 $aBanks and Banking$2imf 606 $aBanks and banking$2imf 606 $aBanks$2imf 606 $aChoice of Technology$2imf 606 $aDemographic Economics: General$2imf 606 $aDemography$2imf 606 $aDepository Institutions$2imf 606 $aEconomic Development: General$2imf 606 $aEconomic growth$2imf 606 $aEconomic sectors$2imf 606 $aFinance$2imf 606 $aFinance: General$2imf 606 $aFinancial Markets and the Macroeconomy$2imf 606 $aFinancial markets$2imf 606 $aFinancial sector development$2imf 606 $aFinancial services industry$2imf 606 $aFinancial services$2imf 606 $aIndustrialization$2imf 606 $aIndustries: Manufacturing$2imf 606 $aIndustry Studies: Manufacturing: General$2imf 606 $aMacroeconomics$2imf 606 $aManufacturing and Service Industries$2imf 606 $aManufacturing industries$2imf 606 $aManufacturing$2imf 606 $aMicro Finance Institutions$2imf 606 $aMortgages$2imf 606 $aPopulation & demography$2imf 606 $aPopulation and demographics$2imf 606 $aPopulation$2imf 607 $aSouth Africa$2imf 615 0$aEconomic development$xEconometric models. 615 0$aFinance$xEconometric models. 615 7$aBank deposits 615 7$aBanking 615 7$aBanks and Banking 615 7$aBanks and banking 615 7$aBanks 615 7$aChoice of Technology 615 7$aDemographic Economics: General 615 7$aDemography 615 7$aDepository Institutions 615 7$aEconomic Development: General 615 7$aEconomic growth 615 7$aEconomic sectors 615 7$aFinance 615 7$aFinance: General 615 7$aFinancial Markets and the Macroeconomy 615 7$aFinancial markets 615 7$aFinancial sector development 615 7$aFinancial services industry 615 7$aFinancial services 615 7$aIndustrialization 615 7$aIndustries: Manufacturing 615 7$aIndustry Studies: Manufacturing: General 615 7$aMacroeconomics 615 7$aManufacturing and Service Industries 615 7$aManufacturing industries 615 7$aManufacturing 615 7$aMicro Finance Institutions 615 7$aMortgages 615 7$aPopulation & demography 615 7$aPopulation and demographics 615 7$aPopulation 700 $aRamcharan$b Rodney$01816104 712 02$aInternational Monetary Fund.$bResearch Department. 801 0$bDcWaIMF 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910956116403321 996 $aDoes Economic Diversification Lead to Financial Development?
