But from Sophus Reinert's perspective, eighteenth-century political economy can be understood only in the context of the often brutal imperial rivalries then unfolding in Europe and its former colonies and the positive consequences of active economic policy. The idea of economic emulation was the prism through which philosophers, ministers, reformers, and even merchants thought about economics, as well as industrial policy and reform, in the early modern period. With the rise of the British Empire, European powers and others sought to selectively emulate the British model. In mapping the general history of economic translations between 1500 and 1849, and particularly tracing the successive translations of the Bristol merchant John Cary's seminal 1695 Essay on the State of England, Reinert makes a compelling case for the way that England's aggressively nationalist policies, especially extensive tariffs and other intrusive market interventions, were adopted in France, Italy, Germany, and Scandinavia before providing the blueprint for independence in the New World. Relatively forgotten today, Cary's work served as the basis for an international move toward using political economy as the prime tool of policymaking and industrial expansion.Reinert's work challenges previous narratives about the origins of political economy and invites the current generation of economists to reexamine the foundations, and future, of their discipline. 606 $aEconomics$zEurope$xHistory$y18th century 606 $aEnlightenment$zEurope 606 $aPhilosophy, European$y18th century 607 $aEurope$xIntellectual life$y18th century 615 0$aEconomics$xHistory 615 0$aEnlightenment 615 0$aPhilosophy, European 676 $a330.1094 686 $aMD 1800$2rvk 700 $aReinert$b Sophus A$0792474 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910955795703321 996 $aTranslating empire$94363101 997 $aUNINA LEADER 02940oam 2200661 a 450 001 9910957895503321 005 20200520144314.0 010 $a9798400631719 010 $a9786612566141 010 $a9781282566149 010 $a1282566148 010 $a9781567207248 010 $a1567207243 024 7 $a10.5040/9798400631719 035 $a(CKB)1000000000821127 035 $a(EBL)495172 035 $a(OCoLC)648757369 035 $a(SSID)ssj0000358352 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)11304465 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000358352 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)10376907 035 $a(PQKB)10146577 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL495172 035 $a(CaPaEBR)ebr10271344 035 $a(CaONFJC)MIL256614 035 $a(DLC)BP9798400631719BC 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC495172 035 $a(Perlego)4169997 035 $a(EXLCZ)991000000000821127 100 $a20240214e20082024 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aur|n|---||||| 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 10$aControversial cinema $ethe films that outraged America /$fKendall R. The ongoing culture wars continue to shape the American political landscape, and controversial films continue to be a major point of conflict.
