TAXATION AND BENEFITS RELATED TO JOB STATUS"" 330 3 $aThe labor participation rate in Slovenia has been lower than in the EU-15 (the members states prior to May 2004), particularly for the low-income and older individuals. Using simulations of tax and social benefits and public pensions, the paper shows how the current tax, welfare, and pension systems create disincentives to work among these groups. The paper finds that incentives to retire early are strong for men, especially low-wage earners. The marginal effective tax rates also make it costly for low-income individuals to work and negatively affect the probability of participating. The paper proposes reform measures to enhance work incentives and labor participation, which will be crucial for dealing with population aging and for achieving higher potential growth in Slovenia. 410 0$aIMF Working Papers; Working Paper ;$vNo. 2006/298 606 $aLabor supply$zSlovenia 606 $aPublic welfare$zSlovenia 606 $aIncome tax$zSlovenia 606 $aPensions$zSlovenia 606 $aEarly retirement$zSlovenia 606 $aIncome economics$2imf 606 $aLabor economics$2imf 606 $aLabor Economics: General$2imf 606 $aLabor$2imf 606 $aLabour$2imf 606 $aMacroeconomics$2imf 606 $aNonwage Labor Costs and Benefits$2imf 606 $aPension spending$2imf 606 $aPensions$2imf 606 $aPrivate Pensions$2imf 606 $aPublic Finance$2imf 606 $aRetirement Policies$2imf 606 $aRetirement$2imf 606 $aSocial Security and Public Pensions$2imf 606 $aWages$2imf 606 $aWages, Compensation, and Labor Costs: General$2imf 607 $aSlovenia, Republic of$2imf 615 0$aLabor supply 615 0$aPublic welfare 615 0$aIncome tax 615 0$aPensions 615 0$aEarly retirement 615 7$aIncome economics 615 7$aLabor economics 615 7$aLabor Economics: General 615 7$aLabor 615 7$aLabour 615 7$aMacroeconomics 615 7$aNonwage Labor Costs and Benefits 615 7$aPension spending 615 7$aPensions 615 7$aPrivate Pensions 615 7$aPublic Finance 615 7$aRetirement Policies 615 7$aRetirement 615 7$aSocial Security and Public Pensions 615 7$aWages 615 7$aWages, Compensation, and Labor Costs: General 700 $aEgoume Bossogo$b Philippe$01816205 701 $aTuladhar$b Anita$01816206 712 02$aInternational Monetary Fund.$bEuropean Dept. 801 0$bDcWaIMF 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910955017003321 996 $aTax, Welfare, and Pension Reforms in Slovenia$94372002 997 $aUNINA
