Both gender roles overall as well as the more specific roles of mother and father are investigated. The main approach is to systematically study adjectival descriptions of characters both quantitatively and qualitatively in order to find recurring patterns of description that function as part of defining a social role. The method of classification is primarily through semantic domains. The study shows that the female social role is defined as involving few mental qualities, whereas a pleasant appearance is important. In contrast, social status and positive mental characteristics are important defining factors for the male social role. 410 0$aPragmatics & beyond ;$vnew ser., 195. 606 $aEnglish language$y18th century 606 $aEnglish language$y19th century 606 $aEnglish language$xSocial aspects$zEngland 606 $aEnglish language$xUsage$zEngland 607 $aEngland$xLanguages$y18th century 607 $aEngland$xLanguages$y19th century 615 0$aEnglish language 615 0$aEnglish language 615 0$aEnglish language$xSocial aspects 615 0$aEnglish language$xUsage 676 $a420.9/09033 686 $aHF 110$2rvk 701 $aPahta$b Paivi$0424323 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910954740903321 996 $aSocial roles and language practices in late modern English$94344260 997 $aUNINA
