These "scanner data" offer a number of attractive features for economists and statisticians, because they are collected continuously, are available quickly, and record prices for all items sold, not just a statistical sample. But scanner data also present a number of difficulties for current statistical systems. Scanner Data and Price Indexes assesses both the promise and the challenges of using scanner data to produce economic statistics. Three papers present the results of work in progress at statistical agencies in the U.S., United Kingdom, and Canada, including a project at the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics to investigate the feasibility of incorporating scanner data into the monthly Consumer Price Index. Other papers demonstrate the enormous potential of using scanner data to test economic theories and estimate the parameters of economic models, and provide solutions for some of the problems that arise when using scanner data, such as dealing with missing data. 410 0$aStudies in income and wealth ;$vv. 64. 606 $aConsumer price indexes$xData processing 606 $aConsumer price indexes$xMethodology 606 $aPrice indexes$xData processing 606 $aPrice indexes$xMethodology 606 $aPrices$xData processing 606 $aPrices$xStatistical methods 606 $aPoint-of-sale systems 606 $aScanning systems 615 0$aConsumer price indexes$xData processing. 615 0$aConsumer price indexes$xMethodology. 615 0$aPrice indexes$xData processing. 615 0$aPrice indexes$xMethodology. 615 0$aPrices$xData processing. 615 0$aPrices$xStatistical methods. 615 0$aPoint-of-sale systems. 615 0$aScanning systems. 676 $a330 s 676 $a338.5/28/0285574 701 $aFeenstra$b Robert C$0126602 701 $aShapiro$b Matthew D$g(Matthew David)$0126903 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910953972503321 996 $aScanner data and price indexes$94364877 997 $aUNINA
