It identifies an idealised folk model of harmoniouscommunities, in spite of the social divide and open conflict that have long affected the region; this model affects daily life and sociolinguistic studies alike. A reading of sociolinguistic studies from the region revealsethnolinguistic differentiation. Qualitative analysis of material from (London)Derry shows people often stressing tolerance in their community, while accounts of their activities contain evidence of ethnic division and strife. Quantitative analysis charts six changes in (London)Derry English. Variation correlates to varying degrees with age, ethnicity, class, sex and social network. The ethnic dimension, while not the most important parameter in all cases, plays a role in relation to all the changes examined. 410 0$aImpact, studies in language and society ;$v7. 606 $aEnglish language$xDialects$zNorthern Ireland$zDerry 606 $aEnglish language$xVariation$zNorthern Ireland$zDerry 606 $aEthnic groups$zNorthern Ireland$zDerry 606 $aEthnicity$zNorthern Ireland$zDerry 607 $aDerry (Northern Ireland)$xSocial conditions 607 $aDerry (Northern Ireland)$xEthnic relations 607 $aDerry (Northern Ireland)$xLanguages 615 0$aEnglish language$xDialects 615 0$aEnglish language$xVariation 615 0$aEthnic groups 615 0$aEthnicity 676 $a427/.941621 686 $aHF 550$2rvk 700 $aMcCafferty$b Kevin$01799610 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910953830103321 996 $aEthnicity and language change$94343985 997 $aUNINA
