Wells, one of the important yet historically neglected leaders among the nineteenth-century Mormons-leaders like Heber C. Kimball, George Q. Cannon, and Jedediah M. Grant. An adult convert to the Mormon faith during the Mormons' Nauvoo period, Wells developed relationships with men at the highest levels of the church hierarchy, emigrated to Utah with the Mormon pioneers, and served in a series of influential posts in both church and state. Wells was known especially as a military leader in both Nauvoo and Utah-he led the territorial militia in four Indian conflicts and a confrontation with the US Army (the Utah War). But he was also the territorial attorney general and obtained title to all the land in Salt Lake City from the federal government during his tenure as the mayor of Salt Lake City. He was Second Counselor to Brigham Young in the LDS Church's First Presidency and twice served as president of the Mormon European mission. Among these and other accomplishments, he ran businesses in lumbering, coal mining, manufacturing, and gas production; developed roads, ferries, railroads, and public buildings; and presided over a family of seven wives and thirty-seven children. Wells witnessed and influenced a wide range of consequential events that shaped the culture, politics, and society of Utah in the latter half of the nineteenth century. Using research from relevant collections, sources in public records, references to Wells in the Joseph Smith papers, other contemporaneous journals and letters, and the writings of Brigham Young, Quentin Thomas Wells has created a serious and significant contribution to Mormon history scholarship. 606 $aLatter Day Saints$zUtah$xHistory 606 $aLatter Day Saints$zUtah$vBiography 615 0$aLatter Day Saints$xHistory. 615 0$aLatter Day Saints 676 $a289.3092 676 $aB 700 $aWells$b Quentin$01814499 801 0$bMdBmJHUP 801 1$bMdBmJHUP 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910964925303321 996 $aDefender$94368444 997 $aUNINA LEADER 03231nam 2200697 a 450 001 9910953597303321 005 20250204111511.0 010 $a9781452235409 010 $a9781322305387 010 $a1322305382 010 $a9781452267258 010 $a1452267251 010 $a9781604263145 010 $a1604263148 035 $a(OCoLC)429409823 035 $a(MiFhGG)GVRL2ZHK 035 $a(CKB)1000000000746786 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC419574 035 $a(MiFhGG)9781604263145 035 $a(OCoLC)646755777 035 $a(StDuBDS)EDZ0000077678 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC996931 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL996931 035 $a(OCoLC)809773653 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC4004118 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL4004118 035 $a(OCoLC)958542495 035 $a(EXLCZ)991000000000746786 100 $a20040303d2004 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aurun|---uuuua 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 00$a100 Americans making constitutional history $ea biographical history /$fedited by Melvin I.
