The overarching goal was to better understand how they lived by examining what they ate, how they utilized the landscape, and how this changed over time.<br><br>Recent archaeological advances offer new ways to gain insight into the lives of people who died many years ago. With the application of biochemistry, archaeologists can study an individual's dietary choices from the time they were born up until the last few months of life, providing a fuller picture of how people lived, the challenges they may have faced, and the choices they made. This study tests the application of a technique known as dentine micro-sampling, in which the inner part of a tooth is sectioned into thin strips, each representing roughly nine months of development. These strips were subjected to stable carbon and nitrogen isotope analysis, unveiling the chemical markers of different foods. The results show that the dietary contribution of terrestrial and aquatic food sources varied within and between cemeteries and cultural periods, which can be viewed as evidence of dietary independence among groups occupying the same area. The results also show that the movement of these individuals around the Lake Baikal region is observable in the chemical markers from their teeth. In conjunction with other methods, dentine micro-sampling helps us understand the interplay of personal choice and ecological constraint that makes up the dietary behaviour of these prehistoric peoples. 606 $aHunting and gathering societies$zRussia (Federation)$zSiberia 606 $aExcavations (Archaeology)$zRussia (Federation)$zSiberia$3http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh2008120000 606 $aPrehistoric peoples$xFood$zRussia (Federation)$zSiberia 606 $aAgriculture, Prehistoric$zRussia (Federation)$zSiberia 606 $aHuman remains (Archaeology)$zRussia (Federation)$zSiberia 606 $aDental anthropology$3http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh85036858 606 $aNutritional anthropology$3http://id.loc.gov/authorities/subjects/sh91001556 606 $aChasseurs-cueilleurs$zRussie$zSibe?rie 606 $aFouilles (Arche?ologie)$zRussie$zSibe?rie 606 $aRestes humains (Arche?ologie)$zRussie$zSibe?rie 606 $aSocie?te?s pre?historiques$xAlimentation$zRussie$zSibe?rie 606 $aAgriculture pre?historique$zRussie$zSibe?rie 606 $aAnthropologie de l'alimentation 606 $aAgriculture, Prehistoric$2fast 606 $aExcavations (Archaeology)$2fast 606 $aHuman remains (Archaeology)$2fast 606 $aHunting and gathering societies$2fast 606 $aPrehistoric peoples$xFood$2fast 607 $aRussia (Federation)$zSiberia$2fast 615 0$aHunting and gathering societies 615 0$aExcavations (Archaeology) 615 0$aPrehistoric peoples$xFood 615 0$aAgriculture, Prehistoric 615 0$aHuman remains (Archaeology) 615 0$aDental anthropology. 615 0$aNutritional anthropology. 615 6$aChasseurs-cueilleurs 615 6$aFouilles (Arche?ologie) 615 6$aRestes humains (Arche?ologie) 615 6$aSocie?te?s pre?historiques$xAlimentation 615 6$aAgriculture pre?historique 615 6$aAnthropologie de l'alimentation 615 7$aAgriculture, Prehistoric. 615 7$aExcavations (Archaeology) 615 7$aHuman remains (Archaeology) 615 7$aHunting and gathering societies. 615 7$aPrehistoric peoples$xFood. 676 $a709.0113 676 $a306.3/64095709012 700 $avan der Haas$b Victoria$01433917 801 0$bScCtBLL 801 1$bScCtBLL 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910917279903321 996 $aGrowing up in the Cis-Baikal Region of Siberia, Russia$93584756 997 $aUNINA
