Theories of occult conspiracy then regularly led to major political scandals, such as the trial of Eleanor Cobham Duchess of Gloucester in 1441. While accusations of magical treason against high-ranking figures were indeed a staple of late medieval English power politics, they acquired new significance at the Reformation when the 'superstition' embodied by magic came to be associated with proscribed Catholic belief. Francis Young here offers the first concerted historical analysis of allegations of the use of magic either to harm or kill the monarch, or else manipulate the course of political events in England, between the fourteenth century and the dawn of the Enlightenment. His book addresses a subject usually either passed over or elided with witchcraft: a quite different historical phenomenon. He argues that while charges of treasonable magic certainly were used to destroy reputations or to ensure the convictions of undesirables, magic was also perceived as a genuine threat by English governments into the Civil War era and beyond."--book jacket. 410 0$aInternational library of historical studies ;$v107. 606 $aWitchcraft$xPolitical aspects$zEngland$xHistory$yTo 1500 606 $2Magic, alchemy & hermetic thought 615 0$aWitchcraft$xPolitical aspects$xHistory 676 $a133.4/30941 700 $aYoung$b Francis$g(Francis Kendrick),$0970243 801 0$bBTCTA 801 1$bCaBNVSL 801 2$bCaBNVSL 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910815567103321 996 $aMagic as a political crime in medieval and early modern England$93943665 997 $aUNINA LEADER 01694nas 2200481-a 450 001 9910895682503321 005 20250217110322.0 035 $a(CKB)110975506070239 035 $a(CONSER)sn-87018024- 035 $a(DE-599)ZDB2692526-6 035 $a(DcWaBHL)43408 035 $a(EXLCZ)99110975506070239 100 $a19870422a19169999 --- - 101 0 $aita 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 00$aAnnali del Museo civico di storia naturale Giacomo Doria 210 $aGenova $cStab. tipo-litografico P.
