The concept of sustainability, however, has been strikingly under-theorized. Sustainability and the Civil Commons provides what has been lacking since the publication of the Brundtland Report - a firm foundation and a clear vision of alternatives.Using rural communities as her reference-point, Jennifer Sumner exposes the unsustainable impacts of corporate globalization, and develops a framework to explain why current definitions of sustainability are profoundly inadequate. From this foundation, she allies sustainability with the concept of the civil commons - including universal healthcare, environmental protocols, workplace safety regulations, and public education - demonstrating how globalizing the civil commons, not corporate-sponsored trade treaties, opens the way for truly 'sustainable globalization'. Sustainability and the Civil Commons moves beyond rural roots through Antonio Gramsci's model of hegemony, Jürgen Habermas's theory of communicative action, and John McMurtry's life-value ethics to build a comprehensive understanding of sustainability that combines global reach with local focus. It will be an invaluable resource for scholars and practitioners interested in sustainability, globalization, community development, and rural studies. 606 $aSustainable development 606 $aGlobalization 606 $aCapitalism 606 $aCooperation 606 $aQuality of life 607 $aCanada$xRural conditions 608 $aElectronic books. 615 0$aSustainable development. 615 0$aGlobalization. 615 0$aCapitalism. 615 0$aCooperation. 615 0$aQuality of life. 676 $a320.5/8 700 $aSumner$b Jennifer$f1949-$0887033 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910456404103321 996 $aSustainability and the civil commons$91980857 997 $aUNINA LEADER 02059nam 2200613Ia 450 001 9910781183903321 005 20230725044904.0 010 $a0-8070-9775-6 035 $a(CKB)2550000000010618 035 $a(OCoLC)607553719 035 $a(CaPaEBR)ebrary10378005 035 $a(SSID)ssj0000397862 035 $a(PQKBManifestationID)11278445 035 $a(PQKBTitleCode)TC0000397862 035 $a(PQKBWorkID)10361143 035 $a(PQKB)10144947 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC3118079 035 $a(MiAaPQ)EBC6077424 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL3118079 035 $a(CaPaEBR)ebr10378005 035 $a(CaONFJC)MIL487485 035 $a(Au-PeEL)EBL6077424 035 $a(EXLCZ)992550000000010618 100 $a20090903d2010 uy 0 101 0 $aeng 135 $aurcn||||||||| 181 $ctxt 182 $cc 183 $acr 200 14$aThe match$b[electronic resource] $e"savior siblings" and one family's battle to heal their daughter /$fBeth Whitehouse 210 $aBoston $cBeacon Press$dc2010 215 $a1 online resource (267 p.) 300 $aBibliographic Level Mode of Issuance: Monograph 311 $a1-299-56235-3 311 $a0-8070-7286-9 606 $aAnemia in children$xPatients$zNew York (State)$zNew York$vBiography 606 $aBone marrow$xTransplantation$xPatients$zNew York (State)$zNew York$vBiography 606 $aPure red cell aplasia$xPatients$zNew York (State)$zNew York$vBiography 606 $aFertilization in vitro, Human 606 $aProcurement of organs, tissues, etc 615 0$aAnemia in children$xPatients 615 0$aBone marrow$xTransplantation$xPatients 615 0$aPure red cell aplasia$xPatients 615 0$aFertilization in vitro, Human. 615 0$aProcurement of organs, tissues, etc. 676 $a362.198/921520092 700 $aWhitehouse$b Beth$f1961-$01510111 801 0$bMiAaPQ 801 1$bMiAaPQ 801 2$bMiAaPQ 906 $aBOOK 912 $a9910781183903321 996 $aThe match$93742414 997 $aUNINA LEADER 01000nas 2200373 c 450 001 9910894457103321 005 20200331143242.0 035 $a(CKB)3790000000115155 035 $a(OCoLC)643668688 035 $a(DE-101)1002138183 035 $a(DE-599)ZDB2552282-6 035 $a(EXLCZ)993790000000115155 100 $a20100504a20099999 |y | 101 0 $apor 135 $aur||||||||||| 181 $ctxt$2rdacontent 182 $cc$2rdamedia 183 $acr$2rdacarrier 200 00$aA Peste$eRevista de Psicana?lise e Sociedade e Filosofia$fPontifi?cia Universidade Cato?lica de Sa?o Paulo 210 31$aSa?o Paulo$cUniv.$d2009- 215 $aOnline-Ressource 311 08$a2175-6104 608 $aZeitschrift$2gnd-content 676 $a150 676 $a300 676 $a100 686 $aPHILOS$qDE-12$2fid 801 0$b0355 801 1$bDE-101 801 2$b0012 906 $aJOURNAL 912 $a9910894457103321 996 $aA Peste$94242160 997 $aUNINA
